Santa Monica, CA

My former coffee house, PEETS, closed its doors on Main Street in late December 2017, and I have been Latte-less for nearly eight long months. Eight. Long. Months!

My writing has suffered. (See Blog.) My daily friendships have fallen by the wayside. (Apologies!) To make matters worse, I now brew my own coffee at home. (It’s terrible.)

In Los Angeles, the neighborhood coffee shop is the European equivalent of the corner café or a British Pub: Neighbors, Tennis Partners, Surfers, Artists, Friends. One sees them all. And vice versa. Café Society, indeed.

Main Street Bids Farewell to Locals’ Favorite Peets Coffee

I Just Can’t Quit You.

I follow my former beloved barista, Marvin, on Snapchat. We keep in touch. For a while, I sent him photos of my lame attempts at steamed milk topped coffee. He was unimpressed. He sends me Snaps of his travel adventures. (Marvin could drink me under the table.)

Meanwhile, I will occasionally see other Peets regulars out and about in the world of Ocean Park, and I always stop them to say Do you miss Peets? They all do. We all miss Marvin who knew everyone’s name (and drink). Marvin would patiently endure new manager after new manager and break them in on how Coffee is done on Main Street.

Marvin lasted well over 15 years while each of those new managers maybe lasted a year.

PINTO SECRET LIFE OF

There are an abundance of Coffee houses in my neighborhood, Ocean Park: Dogtown Coffee, Urrth Café, Starbucks, Groundworks, Bulletproof. The Peets Coffee at Edgemar was the Goldilocks of Coffee shops: It was just right.

Supposedly, Blue Bottle Coffee is to take over the Peets location. All the walls have been knocked down, the entire space has been gutted. Currently, there is a trench dug in the concrete floor.

No coffee will be poured anytime soon, I fear. Eight long months (and counting)!
