TV Surf Report: Orders for Adaptations Continue Hot Trend This Script Development Season

SPOCK ON ENTERPRISE MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING

(Updated 04 April 2016)

Santa Monica, CA — Hollywood loves a good book, a hot play, re-boot, re-make, dark comic, hit song, magazine article, standup comedy routine, web series , and music video.

It’s not that Tinseltown doesn’t love original stories anymore, it’s just they crave some sort of name recognition, pre-sold titles that have marketing value.

While original ideas are still one way to sell something, Adaptations are the hot trend this Pilot Season as Networks and Digital Platforms are scooping them up.  In fact, there are so many, this blog entry is a continuation of Part One (see Aug. 17th entry — the list is long!).

Film Surf Report: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Infinity Wars & Phase Three Explained!

THOR     AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON     DR STRANGE   guardians-of-the-galaxy-1

Santa Monica, CA  — The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) begins and, presumably, ends with the capture and use of those darn Infinity Stones, heretofore, glimpsed in Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Oh, and Guardians of the Galaxy.  And, let’s not forget Ant-Man.

I now know where Marvel is going (and also, where Marvel is subsequently taking me) in its Super Hero storytelling: Phase Three.

(And, I should add, I would have known much earlier had I simply read the comics! I cannot tell you how annoyed I get at television viewers aghast at the happenings on Game of Thrones when all they needed to do (like me) is to have read the books (as I have done!).

You can now know, as well, dear Readers of this fantastic Blog, about Phase Three.

ANT MAN & YELLOW JACKET    BLACK PANTHER

Click the link below for a 7-minute re-cap (yes, it’s 7 minutes, dammit!) that is well worth your time to get all the facts you’ll need for the next five years of Marvel movies which will include:

Which film are you looking forward to the most?

Are you angry that I did not include the three Iron Man films or the second Captain America film (The Winter Soldier….the best!) in the above-referenced chronology?

Did you understand the Video?  Did you catch Josh Brolin voicing Thanos?

TV Surf Report: Hollywood Loves A Good Bio Pic…

YOUNG POPE    TEDDY ROOSEVELT

Santa Monica, CA — Hollywood loves a good Bio Pic, so be prepared for the onslaught heading your way over the next year as there are lots on tap:  Anita Hill! The Pope! Teddy Roosevelt! Glo Steinem!

Not surprisingly, HBO leads the way in this very tried-and-true genre which has served the pay cable network admirably over the years.

However, Showtime, Netflix and ABC are also in this game.  Historical figures, disgraced aristocrats, and cultural icons feature prominently, and some of the depictions are not favorable.

In February, audiences could be treated to The Madoffs x2 as both ABC and HBO air competing bio pics of the disgraced financial advisor.

ANITA HILL   GLORIA STEINEMUNDAUNTED COURAGE BOOK COVER

  • American Lion at HBO is a 6-hour miniseries adaptation starring Sean Penn as Andrew Jackson.  Lionsgate produces.
  • All the Way at HBO sees Bryan Cranston reprise his Tony-winning role as LBJ in Robert Schenkkan’s play.
  • The Life & Times of Teddy Roosevelt at Showtime.  The youngest POTUS gets the limited series treatment.  No actor attached yet.
  • Coat of Many Colors at NBC is part Bio Pic, part Adaptation as the well-known hit song written by Dolly Parton becomes an event holiday faith-based telefilm.  (Premiered to big numbers in December, as predicted.)
  • The Madoffs at ABC is a 4-hour miniseries “inspired by” ABC News Brian Ross’ book, The Madoff Chronicles: Inside The Secret World of Bernie & Ruth.  Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner star alongside Charles Grodin and Lewis Black.
  • Wizard of Lies at HBO is a 2-hour movie starring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer as The Madoffs.  Barry Levinson directs this adaptation of Diana Henriques’ book with additional material from Truth & Consequences by Laurie Sandell.

DENIRO & PFEIFFER   MADOFFS

  • Lewis & Clark at HBO is a 6-hour miniseries based on Stephen Ambrose’s novel, Undaunted Courage.  Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenarts star.  Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, and Brad Pitt are among the many executive producers.
  • The Young Pope at HBO stars Jude Law in this 8-episode series chronicling the beginning of Pope Pius XIII.  Diane Keaton and James Cromwell co-star in this Sky-HBO-Canal international co-production.  Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino directs.
  • MS. at HBO stars Marisa Tomei and Kathy Najimy in a miniseries produced by George Clooney about renowned feminist Gloria Steinem.
  • Billie Jean Vs. Bobby at HBO stars Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti as the tennis stars of the 1973 Battle of the Sexes.  Tom Hanks and Banks executive produce.  Fox Searchlight has its own feature film on the same event starring Steve Carell and Brie Larson.  The race is on!

ELIZABETH BANKS   brie_larson_billie_jean_king_-_split_2015

  • Confirmation at HBO stars Kerry Washington as Supreme Court nominee Anita Hill.  Rick Famuyiwa directs.  Eric Stonestreet, Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Hudson co-star.
  • Harriet Tubman at HBO stars Viola Davis as the historic figure of the Underground Railroad in this period drama.
  • The Conquest of the Sun at Netflix is a 6-hour miniseries dramatizing how Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortez defeated the Aztec Empire.  Alfonso Arau directs.
  • Reg at BBC One is based on a true story of an ambulance paramedic who opposed Tony Blair in the 2005 election.  Tim Roth stars.
  • The Reaper at NBC is an event miniseries based on the Nicholas Irving memoir of an Army Specialist based in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, in a perfect world, Lifetime would order a full-length version of the Funny or Die short spoof, Meryl, starring the wonderful Christina Applegate as “the wrong choice to play Meryl Streep.”  So, so funny.  Click the link below to check it out on Funny Or Die.

TV Surf Report: Great Minds Think Alike As Networks Order Competing Scripts for Fashion Houses, Pot Shops, Atlanta, Billie Jean Vs. Bobby, The Madoffs, Bourbon, Fantasy Islands, Powerless Superheroes, and Women With Cancer

MADOFFS    DENIRO & PFEIFFER

(Updated 02 February 2016)

Santa Monica, CA — Good ideas are often shared by more than one person at the same time, so it’s not surprising when Buyers (i.e., Networks) purchase very similar or exactly the same concepts from different Sellers (i.e., Studios).

Call it Zeitgeist, if you will.  Anyway, duplication happens more often than you’d think.

Thus far, Fashion Houses, Pot Shops, Designated Survivors, Small-town Assistants, Dance Dramas, Atlanta, Fantastical Islands, Super Heroes, Billie Jean King, The Madoffs, Bourbon and Cancer are in the Zeitgeist this season as Development Season gets in full swing:

Amazon has ordered 8 episodes of The Collection, a period drama set in Paris following the Nazi occupation about two brothers who run a Fashion House.  Tom Riley (DaVinci’s Demons) stars.  This is a co-production with BBC-1.  Meanwhile, ABC has a script in development called House of Moore from actor Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives, American Crime) about a Versace-esque family who run a notorious Fashion House.

Hollywood is crazy for Pot/Marijuana/Maryjane/Weed/Ganja!  No fewer than five different takes on the leafy plant are in the works.  Kevin Smith self-produced a pilot called Hollyweed.  Uber-producer Chuck Lorre is shopping a Pot Comedy.  Margaret Cho is attached to Highland at HBO.  Adam Scott has a script at NBC called Buds.  And, MTV has a project in development called Weed Dealers.

ABC has beaten Fox to the punch by giving a straight-to-series order for Designated Survivor, a conspiracy thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland as the member of Congress sequestered away from the main body in case something dreadful happens (which it does).  Simon Kinberg and Mark Gordon executive produce.  Meanwhile, over at Fox, the exact premise has a script order for Nikki Tuscano’s take exec produced by none other than Johnny Depp.

ABC competes with itself by buying comedy scripts from Patricia Heaton and from Sean Combs both of which center on small-town girls who move to LA to assist moguls.  Will the Alphabet go with Kill Jill (Heaton) or with The Hustle (Combs)?

Dance Dramas are very popular this year.  Fox is developing a script with prima ballerina Misty Copeland while NBC is working on a drama with Fatima Robinson who choreographed The Wiz: Live!  Meanwhile, ABC has Big Ballet, an adaptation of a UK reality show about plus-sized aspiring dancers.

Also at ABC, Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner star in Bernie & Ruth, a 4-hour miniseries “inspired by”  ABC News reporter Brian Ross’ book, The Madoff Chronicles: Inside the Secret World of Bernie & Ruth.  Charles Grodin and Lewis Black co-star.

Not to be outdone, HBO is producing a 2-hour original movie, Wizard of Lies, based on the book of the same name by Diana Henriques and centering on the disgraced financier Madoff.  Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as the power couple.

DERBY DAY MINT JULEP      barrelwarehouse

Bourbon, my personal favorite Spirit, is definitely in the Zeitgeist this season as two networks develop very similar concepts about powerful Distillers in my home-state of Kentucky.

The Bourbon Kings at NBC hails from Endemol Shine and is a family drama based on J.R. Ward’s novel set in Kentucky and centering on a bourbon empire.  Think the Brown Family who started Brown-Forman, the distiller behind the delicious Woodford Reserve (served best on the rocks and sipped, btw!).

Meanwhile, across town at Fox, the Untitled Bourbon Drama (great title!) from New Wave Entertainment is, (wait for it!), a family soap set in a Bourbon empire.  (Note to reader:  Bourbon can only come from Kentucky much in the same way that Champagne can only come from France.)  Sound familiar?  Empire is a concept that Fox seems determined to duplicate across its schedule.

And now for something uplifting:  Comedies About Women With Cancer!

At Fox, actress Julie Bowen (Modern Family) executive produces Hypochondriac, an adaptation of the Colombian telenovela La Hipocondriaca which centers on a woman who receives a fatal diagnosis and sets out to live her life.  Hilarious!  Hey, ya never know.

Meanwhile, across town at ABC, writers Rick Weiner & Kenny Schwartz (Modern Family) have set up an Untitled Cancer Comedy about a cancer victim who goes into remission after she burns all her bridges, forcing her to move in with her estranged sister (and kids, natch).  Hilarious!  Hey, ya never know….and yet.  I think I do know.  Of course, it’s all about the execution, so let’s wait to judge.  And yet…..

brie_larson_billie_jean_king_-_split_2015    ELIZABETH BANKS

Features and TV will compete on the tennis court as both HBO and Fox Searchlight have bio pics in development based on the 1973 Battle of the Sexes tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.

Steve Carell and Brie Larson star in the Fox Searchlight feature, Battle of the Sexes, directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine).

Meanwhile, HBO has Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks in a bio pic produced by Banks and Tom Hanks’ company, Playtone.

DAMAGE CONTROL   DC LEG SHOW

At ABC, Marvel has sold a script for Damage Control, a half-hour single-camera comedy about the Marvel Cleaning Crew who comes in after Iron Man & Co. devastate a city block in order to save it.  Ben Karlin writes/produces this put pilot commitment.

Meanwhile, at NBC, DC Comics has won a pilot commitment for Powerless, an Office-style workplace comedy set at an insurance agency of normal people who live in the DC Universe.  Ben Queen writes/produces.

ABC looks to re-boot Fantasy Island from Sony Pictures Television, employing a popular trend this season of flipping the gender from male-to-female for the lead character. (Note: this is the second attempt at a re-boot of this series.  The first starred Malcom McDowell.)

Over at CBS, they have their own fantastical island drama with Moreau, an adaptation of  H.G. Well’s book.  This new spin finds a female doctor conducting experiments in a privately funded island hospital.

Atlanta is hot this season as HBO has ordered a pilot for Brothers in Atlanta from Lorne Michaels while FX has Atlanta starring Donald Glover (Community) as one of two cousins who navigate the Rap scene.  HBO has since decided not to move forward with a series, though.

TV Surf Report: Fair To Good Conditions With Lots of Trends To Watch Like Adaptations And Super Heroes

TRAINING DAYGATEWAYHAVANA QUARTETALIENEST

Santa Monica, CA — (Updated 15 January 2015)

The Fall Television Season has just premiered, but networks and digital platforms are already buying new shows and ordering scripts to keep the production machine going.

Two Major Trends are emerging thus far:

A D A P T A T I O N S

Adaptations continue to be very popular.  Writers, are ya sure your script isn’t a Book or perhaps, a hit Song first?  How about a Graphic Novel?

Sorry original screenplay writers, but buyers love a good adaptation of a well-known property that already has a fanbase in place that they don’t have spend marketing dollars explaining what the show is.  Keep writing, though.  Your personal stories will get you the job of adapting the comic book!

All through the halls of Hollywood studios, mid-level studio executives can be heard exalting “it’s based on a best-selling book!” to prospective buyers and upper-level executives who don’t have time (or the inclination) to read.

LITTLE WOMENAMERICAN GODSAND THEN THERE WERE NONENOTEBOOKSIGNATURE OF ALL THINGSAMBASSADORS WIFE

  • Riverdale at The CW is based on the Archies Comic.  Uber-Producer Greg Berlanti attached.  Expect a darker-edged teen drama set in SoCali.

  • The Notebook, Nicholas Spark’s novel and subsequent hit film with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, gets adapted at The CW, minus the older couple affected by Alzheimers Disease.  The CW audience can’t handle older folks.

  • And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie’s popular mystery, comes to Lifetime courtesy of BBC-1.  Shoots in Cornwall.
  • The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert at PBS-Masterpiece explores the life of a 19th century lady botanist.

  • Galaxy Quest gets adapted at Amazon.  Same producing team returns for TV version which bodes well. By Grabthar’s Hammer!

GALAXY Q CAST    WIZARD OF LIESBOURBON KINGS

  • Wizard of Lies is the second Bernie Madoff biopic in development.  HBO has booked a 2-hour with Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer based on Diana Henriques’ book with additional material from Laurie Sandell’s Truth & Consequences.  Meanwhile, Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner star as the Madoffs in ABC’s 4-hour miniseries.
  • Caesar at ABC is a contemporary re-telling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar centering on the Mayor of LA who is murdered by conspirators.

S U P E R   H E R O E S

     SUPERGIRL 2 PIC   WATCHMEN

Super Heroes will continue to make their presence felt on the small screen.

Fox and Marvel continue to hammer out a deal for X-Men which I am calling Xavier’s School For the Gifted (because A) it’s a great title! and B) what other setting could they possibly go with!).  DC Comics leads the way, which is interesting since DC is rushing to catch up to red-hot Marvel Studios in the film world:

DC Comics Series:

  • SuperGirl on CBS
  • Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on The CW.  Hawkman & HawkGirl to be introduced on Legends.

TV Surf Report: The Curious Case of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS & Whether To Re-Boot, Re-Cast, Re-Write

XENA   WONDER WOMAN

(Updated 02 January 2016; Originally Published 05 August 2015)

Santa Monica, CA — Lucy Lawless has made headlines speaking to rumors of a possible re-boot of her iconic role, XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, at struggling NBC.

Lawless originated the role more than 15 years ago as a guest-star on THE ADVENTURES OF HERCULES and was subsequently rewarded with her own spin-off.  Both series were created by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and John Schulian.  Both were successful shows in syndication, and both properties are owned by NBC/Universal.

Full disclosure: I was/am a fan of both series, but it was Xena that really captured my attention and viewer loyalty.  The characters were better.  The stories were more engaging and emotional.  They even did a musical episode that furthered the storyline (which would inspire many other series like Buffy to do their own).

Do I want NBC to re-boot Xena?  Sure.

Do I want NBC to remake such a terrific series without the original’s principal cast, producers, writers and directors? Probably.

If you are Bob Greenblatt, NBC’s ultimate creative executive, this is where it gets tricky.

The time is right for The New Adventure of Xena & Gabrielle thanks to the popularity of George R.R. Martin’s masterwork, Game of Thrones, and HBO’s splendid adaptation which has become an international hit that will make money for decades to come.  NBC has clearly taken notice.

One fan-favorite character on GOT is none other than Brienne of Tarth, a female knight and literary kinswoman of Xena.

Also, Warner Bros. has a little indie movie coming out next March called Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice that features a much-loved character with a difficult recent cinematic history known as Wonder Woman.

The newest incarnation of the Amazonian princess bears more than a passing resemblance to Lawless’ Xena.

WONDER WOMAN ON EW   SUPERGIRL 2 PIC

This introduction of Wonder Woman is very important to Warner Bros. as she is a pivotal character in DC Comics’ Justice League franchise and is slated to headline her own standalone movie in 2017.  This must really irk Scarlet Johannson.

NBC can beat Wonder Woman to the punch and/or draft off her invisible jet.

Smart thinking, but can they pull it off?  The network hasn’t exactly created a terrific track record with its re-boots.  Heroes: Reborn has been a modest success and created a much-needed foothold for Thursdays.  Anyone recall the recent Bionic Woman, Ironside failures, though?

Still, CBS continues to score with its re-boot of Hawaii Five-O, so success, even a mild one, can be had.

As always, it starts with The Writer.  NBC has wisely hired Javier Grillo-Marxuach (The 100, Lost, Middleman) to craft the re-boot of everyone’s favorite Warrior Princess.

SyFy gets credit for the best re-boot in recent memory with Battlestar Galactica, but no one deserves more kudos than Executive Producer/Writer Ron Moore, who is currently wowing international audiences with his take on the time-jumping Outlander on Starz.

Moore used the same premise of BSG from the ’70s series on ABC, but updated the characters, deepened the mythology and explored the villainous Cylons to fantastic results.

Original series star Richard Hatch, who played “Apollo”, was re-cast in a supporting role as a corrupt Vice President of the Colonies to good effect.

Which brings us to Lucy Lawless, who coincidentally absolutely killed it on the SyFy re-boot of BSG playing the villainous “Three” model of Cylons.

Lawless herself has said she’s too old at age 47 to play “Xena” on a regular basis as the role is too physical with all the swordplay, horseback riding, and night shoots.

That said, Xena Number One craftily used social media outlet Twitter to show fans and network executives alike that she and former co-star Renee O’Connor (“Gabrielle”) are still alive and kicking and looking very well (i.e., cast them now).

RENEE & LUCY SELFIE  X&G

She’d be up for a TV movie or a feature re-boot but nothing more which is understandable.

Now, what does NBC & Marxuach do?  The network has a property with a built-in fanbase that will help market the show, however, that doesn’t mean they’d accept a new update of Xena without Lawless.  Without the right take on the re-boot with the best writer and without the right actors to play Xena and Gabrielle, failure is a likelihood.

A one-off movie doesn’t really do NBC any good and de-values the property.  Perhaps, they’ll take a note out of Fox’s playbook and re-boot Xena for six episodes with Lawless just as Chris Carter has done with The X-Files and its original stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.  This would be the safest route to go.

Finally, an updated new series with new actors and a new storyline would seem to be the longest shot at success, however, this approach has the biggest upside should the new version work.  NBC needs a hit.

Super Women are on the rise, too.  The time seems to be Now.

CBS has Supergirl which premiered strongly this Fall but has leveled off to very modest numbers. It looks like a winner…just on another network other than CBS.  I predict Supergirl will end up on The CW at some point.

SUPER GIRL ACTUAL   captain-marvel

In the feature world, Scarlett Johannson has been wowing audiences as “Black Widow” in The Avengers, Captain America, and Iron Man films.  Marvel, for some reason, hasn’t given the character her own standalone film, though.

Jennifer Lawrence has turned the meta-morph Mystique in the X-Men franchise from villain to heroine in Days of Future Past.  And, let’s not forget Lawrence’s other notable franchise heroine, Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games which concludes in November with the release of Mockingjay Part 2.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics have a lot of money riding on Gal Godot’s performance as Wonder Woman.  And further down the pike sits an as yet-uncast actress to play Captain Marvel for Disney/Marvel.

Television has missed a butt-kicking heroine ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Alias went off the air.  No offense, Peggy Carter.

BUFFY    AGENT CARTER

Finally, Lawless has gone on record as saying the most important aspect to get right in any update of Xena is the relationship between Xena and sidekick Gabrielle.  The series hung on its vitality from beginning to end (even as it jumped the shark numerous times via crucifixion, battling demons in Hell, and killing off the Olympic and Norse gods).

I agree with Lawless, however, I’d also add how much I enjoyed the introduction of Greek mythology, the portrayals of the Olympic Gods, and the series humorous tone.  Xena could be wry.  I liked it.

And, I loved Xena’s villains.  They didn’t just die.  They suffered defeats and kept coming back for more until finally achieving the redemption Xena herself desired (i.e., the fantastic Calisto).  To this day, one my favorite moments of Television dialogue is spoken by Xena while killing the seemingly undefeatable Calisto, “No more Life for You.”  It was that memorable because it was that good.

NBC has a tall order to fill should they attempt to re-boot Xena: Warrior Princess and some big shoes, er boots, to fill should they proceed without Lawless.

Film Surf Report: Franchise Fatigue? Get Over It, Audiences! Hollywood’s Got More On The Way

HUNGER GAMES PART 2   SPECTRE

Santa Monica, CA — Whether audiences are tired of all these Sequels, Super Heroes or Continuations of Franchises, Hollywood’s got more on the way.  Think of it as:  Sequels Or Bust!

For the rest of 2015,  we’ve still got to look forward to Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation, the re-boot of Fantastic Four, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2, SPECTRE, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

That’s four out of five guaranteed box office hits.  Sorry, Fantastic Four.  It’s just too damn soon.

Clearly, Fox didn’t learn Sony’s lesson when burned by too many Spider-Man movies.  Andrew Garfield re-booted Tobey Maguire way too soon, but that’s not his fault.

Interestingly, Sony is quite under-represented in 2016 as compared to the other Majors.  SPECTRE will just have to tide them over.  I predict a record box office performance from 007.

Make no mistake, Filmgoers, the major studios are in the Franchise Game.  Academy Awards, be damned.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN    AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON

Next year, 2016, is even more loaded with Event Movies with two or more rolling out every month (January, June, and September are still available, tho):

  • Feb. 12th        Deadpool                                                                     (Fox/Marvel)
  • March 25th    Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice      (WB/DC Comics)
  • April 22nd      The Huntsman                                                             (Universal)
  • May 3rd          Captain America: Civil War                              (Disney/Marvel)
  • May 27th        X-Men: Apocalypse                                                (Fox/Marvel)
  • July 22nd       Star Trek: Beyond                                                 (Paramount)
  • July 22nd      Lady Ghostbusters                                               (Sony)
  • July 29th       The Bourne Ultimate Identity                           (Universal)
  • TBD                Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2                       (Paramount)
  • Aug. 5th         Suicide Squad                                                         (WB/DC Comics)
  • Oct. 7th          X-Men: Gambit                                                      (Fox/Marvel)
  • Nov. 4th        Doctor Strange                                                       (Disney/Marvel)
  • Nov 18th       Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them     (WB)
  • Dec. 16th      Star Wars: Rogue One                                         (Disney)
  • Dec. 25th      Avatar 2                                                                       (Fox)

STAR TREK 3   FORCE AWAKENS

As for 2017, well, let’s just say, there’s more to follow, for better or for worse.  Stay tuned!

Film Surf Report: Summer Sequel & Super Hero Fatigue Sets In…Amy Schumer & Ian McKellen To The Rescue!

ANT MAN   MISSION IMP 5

Santa Monica, CA — While I’ve enjoyed Fast & Furious 7, Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World, Terminator: Genesys and those darn Minions, a generalized cinematic fatigue is setting in, and I require some smaller independent fare to cleanse my film palate from The Sequels, The Super Heroes, and from The Continuations of Franchises.

Enter Amy Schumer, America’s fast-rising comedy superstar, who’s film with Judd Apatow, Trainwreck, strikes my funny bone.  If you haven’t seen her series, Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central, go to You Tube and watch a few sketches.  Hilarious.  Start with “Last Fuckable Day.”  While not an independent film, this studio release is a maverick as it stars a woman in a comedy (written by Schumer).  Looks like a hit which bodes well for the future.

Also here to save the Dog Days of Summer is Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes, an indie movie any Sherlock fan (like myself) just simply cannot pass up.  Bill Condon (no stranger to franchises, see Twilight: Breaking Dawn and Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty & The Beast featuring McKellen) directs.

AMY SCHUMER & BILL HADER   HOLMES MCKELLAN

For more drama, I can recommend Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, a YA adaptation that’s a story for all audiences in a film that is really well done.  Director to watch: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. Screenwriter to watch:  Jesse Andrews.  This film won at Sundance, and for good reason.  It’s good.

GLENN CAMPBELL   AMY DOC PHOTO

On the documentary side, I was really moved by I’ll Be Me, the heart-wrenching last year of Glen Campbell’s final tour as the music legend struggles with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Audiences will be reminded of Campbell’s evergreen music while seeing the cruel erosion by a horrible disease that affects not just the patient but also his family.

Then there’s Amy, the Amy Winehouse biopic/documentary, which chronicles the singer’s downward spiral which led to her untimely death.

These smaller films, these personal stories, remind me of what I really love about movies: Personal Stories! More please, Hollywood….

Meanwhile, bring on Ant-Man (the final film in Marvel’s Phase Two…there better be an Infinity Stone in there somewhere!) and Mission Impossible: 5.

Oh, and Fantastic Four (the re-boot of a franchise not 10 years old).  Later this fall, Jennifer Lawrence brings Katniss to a close with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.

Fantastic_Four_2015_poster   HUNGER GAMES PART 2

Ah, Hollywood.  I don’t know what to do with you sometimes.  Thankfully, I’ve still got a few books to read this summer.

Film Surf Report: Jurassic World Unleashes Hollywood’s Sequel Monster As Sequels & Super Heroes On Tap For Next Five Years

PRATT JURASSIC   CHevWJPUsAEoVew

Santa Monica, CA — The record haul for the worldwide opening for Jurassic World sent ripples through Hollywood this week:  Sequels. Sequels. Sequels.

The big studios are in the Event Movie business, and those Jurassic-type films are exactly what audiences can expect to be fed in the next five years from the majors.  And by “audience,” I mean Men and Boys, age 9-59 who return again and again to see these movies.

Women are being targeted with the recent announcement of additional chapters of Pitch Perfect (#3) and Maleficent.  Women, however, clearly love dinosaurs just as much as acapella songfests.  And, Chris Pratt.  Magic Mike XXL looms on the horizon, too.

Terminator: Genesys has targeted this demo, as well.  We shall see, tho.

Hopefully, indies likes Me And Earl And The Dying Girl will still connect with filmgoers searching for stories that are merely terrific and not super.

ME & EARL & THE DYING GIRL   MISSION IMP 5

Don’t get me wrong, though!  Me loves some big franchise films.

This year, Hollywood has treated us to Fast & Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a successful re-boot of Mad Max. The remainder of 2015 has some big movies on tap, and I’m ready to punch my ticket for MI:5, Spectre, and Mockingjay Part 2.

The sequel I am most excited to see, though, is The Incredibles 2, and it won’t be in theaters until late next year.  Thank you, Brad Bird.

Oh, and there’s that little indie film Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December.  Fingers crossed it can somehow find a connection with an audience.

SPECTRE   HUNGER GAMES PART 2

Meanwhile, this summer marks the 4oth Anniversary of the film that started The Big Summer Movie craze:  Jaws.  Expect another Sequel.

JAWS   INCREDIBLES

Next year, 2016 features the following Sequels and/or Continuations of Franchises:

  • Batman vs. Superman
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • X-Men: Apocalypse
  • Star Trek 3
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
  • X-Men: Gambit
  • Star Wars: Rogue One
  • Avatar 2

Surf Report: Costa Rica Draws Storytellers From Around The World For Forward/Story Writers Lab

GROUP LINE AT SUNSET ON PLAYA GUIONES           SIMON PHOTO OF SAND LOGO

Nosara, Costa Rica — The producers of Forward/Story, which is in part underwritten by Columbia University, invited me to join them and 19 other Storytellers for a 4-day curated residential writer’s lab to explore the future(s) of Storytelling.

  • Presentations were made.
  • Process(es) were discussed.
  • Problems were solved.
  • Margaritas were drunk.
  • Friendships were cemented.

Stories were not only exchanged, but also entrusted during private walks along majestic Playa Guiones at evening tide, truly, the Magic Hour in rural, eco-friendly Nosara.

As the sun began to set over the mighty Pacific, I felt myself jolted with the memory of reading Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune.  I was reminded of Life’s Golden Path, here set before me along the seashore of another country surrounded by a new Tribe.

These innovative Storytellers hail from Scotland, Wales, England, Sweden, France, Canada, Australia, and even, some exotic place called New York.  Many came prepared but left disarmed.  Some arrived unprepared but left armed.

There is a special kind of Alchemy at work in sleepy Nosara.

In fact, the story of Nosara itself is one that needs to be told.  Here is a Third World rural beach community striving for eco-friendly sustainability…and succeeding.

Development is highly restricted, and the environment clearly comes first.  Yet, Nosara is known as The Hamptons of Costa Rica even though the roads remain unpaved, gravel dustbowls where horses, goats and chickens ignore the slowly passing cars and trucks.  Walking paths and bike lanes are envisioned and not for tourists but for the people who live in Nosara, to improve their quality of Life.

The local Costa Rican logistics coordinator for the Forward/Story event is a graduate of UC-Santa Barbara and is intent on achieving his MBA in economic and sustainable development in order to better serve his community.  The future of Nosara looks bright.

As for the international group of Storytellers, their future looks bright, as well.  Super Nova-bright.

The past four days now lay behind them, however, that does not mean it cannot be mined for Wisdom, for lessons learned.  Success and Failure each teach us and must be valued equally.  Part of the weekend was spent sharing Highs & Lows, Problems & Solutions, Ideas & Innovations.

The Future lay ahead, ready for these digital creators and designers to begin, to move Forward.  Producers Lance Weiler and Christy Dena brought together such a diverse group of people and forged a new community of Creatives in the process.  Alchemy, indeed.

So many new Stories to tell and now, so many new ways in which to tell them with so many new collaborators to share the journey along The Golden Path.

Pura Vida, Amigos.  Pura Vida.

{Life is Good.}
