XENA   WONDER WOMAN

(Updated 02 January 2016; Originally Published 05 August 2015)

Santa Monica, CA — Lucy Lawless has made headlines lately speaking to rumors of a possible re-boot of her iconic role, XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, at struggling NBC.

Lawless originated the role more than 15 years ago as a guest-star on THE ADVENTURES OF HERCULES and was subsequently rewarded with her own spin-off.  Both series were created by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and John Schulian.  Both were successful shows in syndication, and both properties are owned by NBC/Universal.

Full disclosure: I was/am a fan of both series, but it was Xena that really captured my attention and viewer loyalty.  The characters were better.  The stories were more engaging and emotional.  They even did a musical episode that furthered the storyline (which would inspire many other series like Buffy to do their own).

Do I want NBC to re-boot Xena?  Sure.

Film Surf Report 2015: Year In Review (Franchise, Franchise, Franchise!)

DAISY STAR WARS TFA

Santa Monica, CA — Make no mistake dear Readers, FRANCHISE is the word in Hollywood these days and for most days to come.  Expect more AvengersMad Max and yes, Terminators.

The highest grossing film of 2015 is a little indie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens directed by unheralded newcomer J.J. Abrams who had previously dabbled in a bit of Television (Alias, Felicity, Lost).

Disney acquired LucasFilm for $4 billion.  The Mouse House plans to make the most of the Galactic Empire by expanding the Jedi-tastic Universe with the release of five new Star Wars films through 2020:

  • Rogue One (Dec. 16, 2016)
  • Episode VIII (May 26, 2017)
  • Han Solo Origin Story (May 25, 2018)
  • Episode IX (2019)
  • Boba Fett (2020)
Franchise. Franchise. Franchise.
Disney’s strategy is to rely on its heavy hitters:  LucasFilm, Pixar, and Marvel Studios. So, expect more Jedi Knights, Cars, and X-Men in your movie-going future.
HUNGER GAMES PART 2
Meanwhile, Lionsgate said farewell to one of its most valuable franchises in 2015 with the final installment of The Hunger Games with Mockingjay Part 2.
Or, so we thought….
The studio recently announced plans to move forward with Prequels to Katniss and Co., presumably focusing on previous Games.  That’s good news for Donald Sutherland’s character, President Snow.
Mockingjay Part 2 has grossed over half a billion dollars the 2nd lowest of the 4-filmology. Lionsgate is going to milk this franchise for all its worth.  Hopefully, author Suzanne Collins will be involved to insure some measure of quality control. May the odds be ever in Her favor.
SPECTRE
The most successful franchise in movies, James Bond, launched its 27th installment last month to great success with Spectre, the second highest-grossing 007 film behind the phenomenal Skyfall.  Sony is in a unique position as the rights to Bond are up this year, so it will be interesting to see which studio backs up the Brinks Truck to retain the services of Britain’s most lethal Double-O.
Universal shocked everyone (and itself) with the mind-boggling success of its Jurassic Park re-boot.  Expect lots of Dinosaurs (and Chris Pratt) in the years to come in addition of more installments of Fast & Furious and Pitch Perfect.
Meanwhile, Universal announced plans to create a shared universe for its Monster Franchises including The Mummy, Frankenstein, and presumably, Dracula.  Smart move…if done well.
MISSION IMP 5         Fantastic_Four_2015_poster
Paramount scored big with Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, the highest grossing film in that franchise’s history.  Producer/Star Tom Cruise will likely score bigger with the 6th installment which is already in the works.
Fox bombed big-time with its ill-fated re-boot of Fantastic Four, a film franchise that’s not even 10 years old.  Audiences didn’t go for it (as I predicted!), and Fox has scrapped plans to make a sequel (for now).  The studio will not let this Marvel property go, however, they have damaged it considerably.
Meanwhile, some of my favorite films of 2015 are not franchises:  Trainwreck, Mr. Holmes, Me & Earl & The Dying Girl, Kingsman (okay, this is a franchise-in-the-making), and I’ll Be Me.
HOLMES MCKELLAN
And congrats to my friends Tom Keveran and Trevor Anthony who completed their first films this year:  Tear Me Apart and A Father’s Love.  Look forward to writing about both in 2016.
Also, Simeon Willis scored in Narcopolis and my brother Will was featured in Men Go to Battle, indies you’ll definitely want to screen.

TV Surf Report 2015: The Year In Review…

DAVID & GILLIAN    PREACHER

Santa Monica, CA — The last week of 2015 is here, so let’s take a look back at the year’s Best & Worst, the Trends, the Lessons Learned in Film & TV and All Things Entertainment.

Be Chill, Bro.  It’s all good!  (Did I mention I surfed Costa Rica this year? Pura Vida!)

Let’s start with Television.

First, there is a lot of it.  So many good shows to DVR. So little time.

CHRIS SULLIVAN THE KNICK        DA VINCI FINAL SEASON

Did you watch the final season of Da Vinci’s Demons on Starz or The Knick on Cinemax?  How about Penny Dreadful on Showtime?  Surely, you binge-watched Jessica Jones on Netflix? The Man in the High Castle on Amazon???

Here are the Biggest Development Trends from 2015:

  • Networks buy scripts that come with Talent Attached.  If you can get your script to Eva Longoria, Reese Witherspoon or Mila Kunis, chances are great that they will get it set up at either a network or a digital platform.
  • Female-Centric stories are a big deal.  The success of new series Blind Spot on NBC, Quantico on ABC, and Supergirl on CBS highlight what everyone should realize:  Women control the remote.
  • Adaptations lessen a Buyer’s fear of scary ideas and are easier to market.  And it’s not just Books that get the TV Treatment, either:  Comics, Graphic Novels, Magazine Articles, Songs, Stand-Up Comedy Routines, Web Series.  Anything Goes!  I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see AMC’s adaptation of Preacher and SyFy’s The Magicians.

HEROES REBORN   X&G

  • Re-Boots will continue thanks to Heroes: Reborn.  Will NBC proceed to Pilot on Xena, though? Or, ABC with its new spin on Fantasy Island?  How about CBS’ dreadful take on Nancy Drew? Hopes are high for Fox’s The X-Files.  There are so many in the pipeline! Netflix loves ’em (Gilmore Girls, Lost in Space).
  • Pre-Sold Titles will continue (i.e., Daredevil, Limitless, Minority Report).  Blame it on corporate synergy now that most networks are connected to studios with film libraries to exploit.  Anyone up for small-screen versions of Galaxy Quest, The Notebook, or Jack Ryan? They are in the works!
  • Bio-Pics. Networks love ’em, especially HBO.  Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, The Young Pope…they are all getting either telefilms or limited series.

JESSICA JONES PROMO SHOT     HELLFIRE CLUB

  • Super Heroes.  More, more, more! (Jessica Jones raises the bar. Can Fox’s take on Hellfire meet it?)  Constantine was a bust on NBC, but the Marvel favorite lives to see another day on The CW.  Marvel and DC are plugged in and ready to rock our viewing world, so settle in your Barca-Lounger and relax.
  • Original Ideas can still make it through the system. (Fingers crossed for Epix’s Berlin Station, and OWN’s Greenleaf.)  Do not lose heart, Scribes!
  • Zeitgeist! It’s true, People.  More than one person can come up with the same good idea as evidenced by the numerous scripts in development at competing networks that bear a strong similarity to one another.  Designated Survivor has been ordered straight-to-series at ABC starring Kiefer Sutherland. Meanwhile, Fox has the same concept ordered to script executive produced by Johnny Depp.  That’s just one example.  There are many many others.

DAWN PATROL    GROUP LINE AT SUNSET ON PLAYA GUIONES

It’s been a great year of Surfing Hollywood, Venice Beach, and Playa Guiones.  Thanks for reading!

And just for laughs (and in case you missed them), please check out SNL’s Adele Saves Thanksgiving as well as Funny Or Die’s Lifetime Original Film with Christina Applegate as Meryl.  Hilarious!  Now streaming…

Film Surf Report: Carrie Fisher Kicked Butt — The Star Wars Sequel I Always Wanted to See: Princess Leia, Evil Jedi

LEIA      CARRIE FISHER

Santa Monica, CA — In preparation for the release of the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I recently re-watched the original trilogy of films as well as The Force Awakens.

The Star Wars Movie I’ll Never Get To See

(But Really Want To!)

After watching Return of the Jedi, I realized the next film (or trilogy) in the series that I really want to see is Princess Leia: Jedi Knight.

Why did George Lucas never go there? Too chauvinistic? Too untimely for the ’80s? This was pre-Buffy, pre-Alias, pre-Xena, each a sarcastic action benefactress of Princess Leia.

Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia coulda kicked more butt learning about The Force from twin brother Luke Skywalker.  Story-wise, perhaps, she would be the next Skywalker to be seduced by the Dark Side of the Force.

In Return of the Jedi, she takes the news that Darth Vader is her father pretty non-chalantly.  Vader tortured her and destroyed her home planet in Star Wars, after all.  And as we all know, Anger and Fear lead to The Dark Side.

There’s an awful lot of Story to explore there with Fisher (who was so good) taking center stage in what Lucas described as more “family soap opera than a story about spaceships.”  Leia fired guns, flew the Millenium Falcon, rescued frozen boyfriends.

She did it all and could have done so much more.

Fisher’s sudden death in December 2016 has made The Last Jedi her swan song as General Leia. Spoiler: The character survives and her fate is left to J.J. Abrams who is writing and directing Ep. IX which is due to hit the theatres in December 2019.

CARRIE AS GENERAL LEIA

In re-watching the original trilogy, I realized the first film doesn’t hold up well nearly 30 years later.  The Empire Strikes Back, however, remains terrific.

Full disclosure:  I saw TESB five times the summer it was released, and at the time, could quote lines verbatim.  As for Return of the Jedi, I am still touched by the passing of both Yoda and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and am still very much creeped out by the Emperor.

Yet, it’s the possibility of seeing Princess Leia: Action Hero that excites me, story-wise.

In my mind’s movie projector, Luke did train Leia to use the Force, and she was seduced by the Dark Side, thereby becoming the de facto villain.

The next two films that would have followed would have seen Luke and Han Solo attempting to save/thwart Leia with Luke ultimately saving her by allowing himself to take her place as a Dark Jedi (not an actual term, I think).  Too obvious?  Probably.  But had these films been made in the ’90s, they would have been great.

FORCE AWAKENS     DAISY STAR WARS TFA

As for Fisher, her post-Star Wars filmography includes memorable supporting turns in some terrific films:  Agatha Christie’s Appointment with Death, Hannah & Her Sisters (in which she co-starred as April whom Dianne Wiest’s character didn’t like because she was “pushy”), When Harry Met Sally, and Soapdish.

Of course, Fisher literally made her mark as a novelist (The Princess Diarist, Postcards from the Edge, Surrender the Pink), Hollywood script doctor, and stage performer (Wishful Drinking), but it’s that missing turn in Star Wars that I wonder if her Writer Self ever considered:  Could Leia have carried the next three films?  Or, why the hell didn’t she get the opportunity?!

SW ORIG TRIO     SWTFA POSTER

Also, with gender equality and salary a big issue right now thanks to Jennifer Lawrence, I wonder if Fisher was paid equal to Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford for the first three films as they shared top billing. I am guessing not.  I’d love to hear her thoughts on this issue. Sadly, we never will.

Unfortunately, in a recent interview on Good Morning America, Fisher entertained rather than informed due to some banal questioning by reporter Amy Robach.  Here’s the link to the interview which has swept Social Media because Fisher (who appears with her dog Gary, a star in his own right on Twitter) is so damn funny:

https://youtu.be/VI-pwktI8AQ

Let me know what you think about the missing Trilogy of films featuring Princess Leia as the latest Skywalker to use The Force.  I remain steadfast in my belief that those films woulda been great!

Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Last Jedi looks well on its way to making a Billion dollars and continuing Disney and Lucas Film’s winning streak at the box office following the successful release of both Rogue One and The Force Awakens.

Leave a comment below.

And speaking of funny, Star Wars fans will greatly appreciate Funny or Die’s group therapy for those still regretting The Phantom Menace….

TV Surf Report: Actors Play Big Part of Buying Trend With Nets Relying Heavily On Scripts With Talent Attached

EVA LONGORIA    RAMBO

Santa Monica, CA —  (Updated 19 March 2016)

Buyers have been scooping up projects with Talent Attached. The list of Actors now producing/selling material is very long and growing longer by the day.

Usually, there is a connection between Actor and Buyer (stars in a series, etc.)  Or, that Buyer wants to be in business with that Actor, so they buy a script from them to get the ball rolling.  Eva Longoria wins 1st Prize for Most Sales this season with Mila Kunis a close second.  Both actors have been prolific saleswomen with comedy and drama scripts set up across town.

So, if you want to sell a script these days: Get Talent Attached.  Same goes for Buyers fearful of spending their development money as it’s easier to take a risk on an original idea with Talent Attached.

Here’s a list-in-progress of Who’s Got What Set Up Where:

TV Surf Report: Women Characters Rule Development Season

JESSICA JONES PROMO SHOT    MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING

Santa Monica, CA — (Update, Dec. 20, 2015) —  Female Characters drive Television as evidenced by Super Girl on CBS, Quantico on ABC, Blindspot on NBC, and Empire on Fox, to name a few.

Critics are calling Netflix’s Jessica Jones the best new show on TV, and it’s an adaptation of a Marvel comic which is part of a greater universe to be explored in another series, The Defenders.  Moreover, the lead character isn’t looking to save the World.  She’s more concerned with her Neighborhood.  Smaller stakes.  More compelling Storytelling.  (Heads up, Super Girl writers!)

This season, some of the projects in development are original ideas, however, most fall in the following categories:

  • American re-makes of Foreign series (UK, Austria, Colombia)
  • Adaptations (reality series, web series, popular films, books, songs)
  • Re-boots of classic series
  • Gender flipping of roles once played by Men.

Well-known women Actors & Writers are shepherding these projects, too: Shonda Rhimes, Felicity Huffman, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Mila Kunis, Olivia Munn, Julie Bowen, Lena Dunham, Stephanie Meyer, Tina Fey, Lynda LaPlante, Dolly Parton, and Eva Longoria.

  • Musical Funeral Home at NBC is a drama based on the Boyd Funeral Home in South Central LA and centers on a mother/daughter.

TV Surf Report: When In Doubt, Nets Order Scripts For Pre-Sold Titles … 28+ Of Them! Movies, Movies, Movies!

MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING    JACK RYAN

(Updated 27 January 2017)

Santa Monica, CA  — Television loves Movies.

Part of a development executive’s job is to cull from a studio’s library those titles of films that could be re-developed as a television series (presumably, for their corporate sister network).

This is both an economical move and a creative move.

Because the studio already owns the property, no nasty option fee is involved, however, you still have to pay a writer to write a script, and you do have original producers to deal with should you contractually require their involvement.

Creatively, the studio and the buyer already knows what they’re going to get…and that it works, so this move is creatively a base hit with audiences.  These titles, therefore, are Pre-Sold.

Paramount’s TV division has been particularly aggressive in its exploitation of a very valuable film library.  NBC and Fox have been the most hungry for Pre-Sold Titles.

This season has seen a flood of Pre-Sold Titles being developed across the board despite the high-profile failure of Amblin Entertainment’s Minority Report on Fox.

Most Film adaptations are flops.  Yet, the memory of  M*A*S*H  and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the millions still generated by those TV adaptations make it a go-to strategy.

The jury is still out on Limitless and Super Girl, and Rush Hour has yet to premiere on CBS.

inlineoffire     EXORCIST

Here are the Pre-Sold Titles (which are different from Re-Boots of Old Series) ordered to script, thus far:

  • The Exorcist has been ordered to pilot at Fox. Demonic possession, anyone?
  • My Best Friend’s Wedding at ABC is a sequel to the popular 1997 PJ Hogan film starring Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett  as a food critic and her gay best friend.
  • Galaxy Quest at Amazon is an example of Paramount’s TV division waking up after a decade of decline and realizing they have a huge library of titles to exploit.  I predict capturing the magic of such great casting will be hard to replicate.  Director Dean Parisot and Producer Mark Gordon return, though.
  • Jack Ryan at Amazon is another Paramount title, however, in this case, it’s a title character and not a film such as A Clear And Present Danger, getting re-developed.  Carlton Cuse (Lost) writes and produces this series order.
  • Star Trek at CBS exemplifies the ultimate Pre-Sold Title as viewers know exactly what they’re going to get (and want).  The re-booted Paramount film franchise has a third film coming out in 2016, Beyond.  This series premieres on CBS & CBS All Access in 2017.  Alex Kurtzman produces.
  • Training Day at CBS has a pilot order for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Director Antoine Fuqua but without stars Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.

WATCHMEN    LEMONY SNICKET

  • Little Women at The CW.  Is it an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s book or a re-development of the popular Winona Ryder feature?  The film’s constant play on cable is what keeps this evergreen property in people’s minds, not the book, I am sorry to say.
  • The Notebook at The CW is a new version of the Nicholas Sparks’ book/film about a young couple in love.  The older couple storyline is reportedly nixed (naturally!).
  • Friday the 13th at The CW brings the successful horror franchise to the small screen.
  • Urban Cowboy at Fox is another Paramount feature adaptation.  Network passed on the Pilot starring young Latinos as well as vets Edward James Olmos and Jim Belushi.
  • Think Like A Man at Fox is based on Steve Harvey’s books/films about the battle of the sexes from four distinct POVs.
  • The Expendables at Fox is a one-hour version of the successful film franchise about washed up action heroes.  Sylvester Stallone executive produces.
  • Behind Enemy Lines at Fox is a new version of the Owen Wilson/Gene Hackman film about a soldier caught you-know-where.
  • Lethal Weapon at Fox is a new version of the popular buddy cop franchise that starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who are now too old for the Fox demo (crazy!).
  • X-Men Hellfire at Fox is the network’s grab at wrenching as much content out of its lone Marvel property, as possible, since ruining Fantastic Four for the near future.
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 2-hour event for Fox starring Laverne Cox in the role Tim Curry made immortal.  Former net prexy Gail Berman produces.
  • Grease: Live! at Fox stars Julianne Hough as Sandy in another piece of event programming.
  • Watchmen at HBO is director Zack Snyder’s attempt at redemption to revive this property after a dull feature version.  Hey, it worked for Buffy!
  • And Then There Were None at Lifetime is a 4-hour miniseries starring Charles Dance, Aidan Turner, Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, and Toby Stephens in this co-production with BBC-One.  Sounds promising!
  • Taken at NBC is a prequel drama version of the Luc Besson/Liam Neeson feature.
  • In the Line of Fire at NBC explores the Secret Service but without Clint Eastwood.
  • Red at NBC is about retired hitmen from the films starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich.  Chances are NBC will “go younger.”
  • Cruel Intentions at NBC is director Roger Kumble’s follow-up to his 1999 feature and centers on the now 16-year-old son of Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillippe’s characters.  Nasty sexting ensues!

HANSEL & GRETEL    GALAXY Q CAST

  • All Of Me at NBC is a remake of the 1994 Steve Martin/Lily Tomlin body-switching comedy, except now, it’s to be an anthology.
  • Heaven is For Real at NBC is the network’s attempt to attract the huge faith-based audience that flocked to theaters to see the film about a small-town pastor whose son has a brush with the after-life.
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events at Netflix is another Paramount title being exploited for a television market.  Director Barry Sonnenfeld returns to tell the story of  Count Olaf and those darn kids.  No word yet if Jim Carrey or Meryl Streep will reprise.
  • Van Helsing at SyFy is an acquisition of an international version from Neil LaBute that has a female lead, Vanessa Van Helsing (ugh!).  Dracula is turning over in his crypt.
  • Shooter at USA stars Ryan Phillippe in the Mark Wahlberg role from the 2007 Paramount film about an 0ff-the-grid Marine sniper.  Wahlberg produces.
  • Hanzel & Gretel hasn’t been laid off yet, but Paramount crunched the numbers and opted to produce for television rather than make a sequel to the surprise hit starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Atherton.
  • Snowpiercer was a bomb domestically, however, it did score a hit internationally.  The TV version isn’t set up yet, but Josh Friedman develops the Chris Evans & Tilda Swinton futuristic drama.
  • Tremors isn’t set up at a network yet, either, but that’s not stopping Universal Cable Prods. and star Kevin Bacon from developing the TV version with Bacon to reprise his role from the film.

TV Surf Report: Networks Rely On Re-Boots To Get Noticed In Increasingly Crowded Marketplace

SPOCK ON ENTERPRISE        DAVID & GILLIAN

Santa Monica, CA —  (Update 15 January 2015)

In today’s crowded television landscape, when there is more content than ever, one way to stand out is re-booting a beloved series hoping audiences will come clambering for something familiar.  Kind of like Thanksgiving dinner.

Networks, Digital Platforms, Streaming Services spend millions of dollars in original development, however, this season, the big trend is The Re-Boot. Expect younger, more female-driven versions of your favorite shows, though.

Hawaii Five-0, now in its 5th season on CBS, proves this theory to be true, however, the successful revival is the exception to the rule.  The jury is still out on NBC’s re-awakening of Heroes: Reborn and ABC’s new version of The Muppets.  ABC has Uncle Buck waiting to premiere, as well.

Anyone remember the recent revivals of Ironside or Bionic Woman?  The networks keep looking to the uber-success of Battlestar Galactica which transcended the original and created a valuable property for NBC/Universal.

Studios own these well-trod properties and revive them at will, knowing there’s an audience out there curious to see what Mulder & Scully have been up to for the last 10 years.

X&G    TWIN PEAKS LARGER

Here are the Old Chestnuts being prepped for re-toasting for your viewing pleasure:

  • One Day at a Time at Netflix.  This time around, the Norman Lear chestnut gets a Cuban-American flavor.
  • Anne of Green Gables at CBC returns with a re-telling of the coming-of-age story.
  • Tales from the Crypt at TNT returns courtesy of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan who loves Anthology.
  • Lost in Space at Netflix.  The Robinson Family is set to re-board the Jupiter 2 in this straight-to-series order for Legendary TV’s re-boot.
  • The Greatest American Hero isn’t set up at a network yet, but that’s not stopping producer Phil Lord (Last Man On Earth) and 20th Century Fox from developing a re-boot of the fondly recalled series that starred William Katt and Connie Selleca
  • Star Trek on CBS.  Intriguing premise here of continuing the franchise, CBS reportedly will explore new characters, premiere the pilot on broadcast, and them stream the series order on CBS All Access.  Fascinating.
  • Gilmore Girls on Netflix.  Amy Sherman-Palladino and Warner Bros. TV have sold four 90-minute episodes with original stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel.  Road trip to Stars Hollow, anyone?!
  • Xena: Warrior Princess on NBC.  Still looking for a writer.  No word yet if original star Lucy Lawless, currently featured on Starz’ Ash vs Evil Dead, is attached to reprise.  Fans are carefully watching/tracking this one!
  • The X-Files on Fox.  Chris Carter revives Mulder & Scully for six episodes premiering in January 2016.  Social Media buzz is strong and bodes well.
  • Twin Peaks on Showtime.  David Lynch and Mark Frost write and direct all 18 episodes which should go down like a rich cup of coffee.  Kyle MacLachlan returns as Agent Dale Cooper.
  • Electra Woman & Dyna Girl stars social media stars Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart in this reboot of the ’70s kitchy Sid & Marty Kroft series which will stream online.
  • The A-Team isn’t set up at a network yet, but that’s not stopping 20th TV from developing a script.

GILMORE GIRLS    fantasy island roarke and tatoo

  • Fantasy Island at ABC.  Mr. Roarke is now a Lady in Sony’s new version which has a script order.
  • Nancy Drew at CBS gets re-imagined as an NYPD detective in her 30s.  Will Pamela Sue Martin play her mother?  Ouch!
  • MacGyver at CBS is revived with Mac now in his 20s.  CBS really wants that younger demo that Big Bang Theory and Super Girl are delivering.
  • Prison Break at Fox.  The weblet has ordered 10 episodes in this limited series with original stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller.
  • Hart to Hart at NBC. This time around, Jonathan & Jennifer Hart are now a gay couple.  No word yet on Freeway the dog’s orientation in this new version from Carol Mendolsohn.
  • 24 at Fox.  Again, the new version goes younger with a new agent.

HR PUFNSTUF   FULLER HOUSE

  • Fuller House at Netflix.  John Stamos headlines this 13-episode order set to premiere in 2016.  Get ready to binge, Uncle Jessie!
  • The Saint at ITV.  Britain’s most stylish crimefighter, Simon Templar, returns.
  • Tennison at ITV is actually a prequel to Prime Suspect which features (shock) a young Jane Tennison in the ’70s.  Six episodes have been ordered.
  • Roots at History Channel.  The ground-breaking miniseries adaptation of Alex Haley’s novel gets re-made.
  • Law & Order at NBC.  Dick Wolf wants to keep the franchise going!
  • H.R. Pufnstuf at Nickelodeon.  A beloved character returns for a new audience.

TV Surf Report: The Clunkers! Original Ideas In Development That Make One Say “They Bought THAT?!!”

CRUEL INTENTIONS   WATCHMEN

Santa Monica, CA — Sometimes, I wonder why and how in the world did a network/digitial platform buy that?  The pitch must have been fantastic “in the room.”

Or, the auspices were just too good to pass up.  Sometimes, you just want to be in business with cool people, hoping their next idea will actually work.

Here are The Clunkers, original ideas networks have bought and put into script development for the upcoming Pilot Season that I wish they hadn’t.

For the record, I am tired of shows about:

  •  Cops!  I am especially tired of female cops paired with old grizzled veterans.
  •  Detectives (with the exception of Sherlock!).
  • Twentysomethings! Stop trying to re-make Friends.  NBC nearly killed itself.
  • Jury Duty is boring!
  • Divorce.  Is not entertaining.

Here are this season’s CLUNKERS, loglines that make me Groan:

  • Splitsville at ABC:  A divorce comedy with single parents living in a cul-de-sac.  Yawn.
  • The Jury at ABC:  Murder Trial from the Jury’s POV.  Have you ever been on a Jury???
  • Smoke & Mirrors at CBS: Mysterious LAPD detective with Houdini-like powers of perception! I have major cop drama fatigue. Find another franchise, please!
  • Squad Goals at ABC: Twentysomething friends realize it’s time to grow up.  Oy vey!
  • Untitled Crime Drama at CBS: Female detective teams up with a biologist in LA. Snore!
  • Watchmen at HBO: Sorry, Zack Snyder. Your film was just barely more exciting than serving jury duty.  HBO, you already have a super hero series.  It’s called Game of Thrones!
  • Oh Mama at NBC: An engaged couple discovers their Mothers are having an affair…with each other! Cue: Rim Shot!  Five years of this?  No.
  • Brides at NBC: Family drama with Dracula’s three brides living the single life in Manhattan.  If Greg Berlanti can make a hit out of this clunker, I will eat my hat!
  • Law & Order: You The Jury at NBC:  Another Jury show, but this one is from Dick Wolf.  Jury Duty is about exciting as watching paint dry. Yawn.
  • Harvest at Spike: A father/daughter in the organ tissue black market.  Hilarious! Note: It’s a drama.
  • Haunted at SyFy: Four adult children of paranormal experts solve family mysteries. Bored just typing the logline.  Sorry, James Frey!

So, am I wrong?  Let me know what you think!

On a completely optimistic note, each of these scripts could turn out to be fantastic, transcending their tired, played out genres.

TV Surf Report: Original Ideas Eke Through Season of Re-Boots, Re-Makes & Adaptations

YOUNG POPE    FELICITY

Santa Monica, CA — Original Ideas can still work their way through Hollywood’s obstacle course of making of Television:

Nuns! Caesar! A Young Pope! Indian Rappers! Alien Congressmen! Heroic Gamers! Kung Fu! Alien Abductees! Historical Fantasy! Dark Comedy! Period Comedy! Mega Churches!

Take heart, Scribes.

This season, the networks and digital platforms are heavily favoring Re-boots of Old Chestnuts, Adaptations, and Pre-Sold Titles, however, there are several promising original concepts getting script orders (or more!).

Here’s the best of what’s been bought and/or being made, thus far (excluding the clunkers! which I’ll list separately!):

  • Berlin Station at EPIX has a 10-episode order for this contemporary spy series that follows a CIA agent’s quest to uncover a leak at the agency’s German outpost.  Richard Armitage (Thorin in LOTR) leads a fantastic cast that includes Richard Jenkins, Michelle Forbes, Rhys Ifans and Tamlyn Tomita.  Excited for this one as it echoes Three Days of the Condor, one of my favorite films.
  • Greenleaf at OWN is a drama set in a Memphis mega-church from writer Craig Wright (Six Feet Under).  Thirteen episodes have been ordered.  Lynn Whitfield stars. Terrific backdrop for storytelling.  Concept has legs.
  • Untitled Bronx Convent Project at ABC features an ensemble of Catholic Nuns at a convent rocked by the arrival of three young novices.  Shonda Rhimes produces.
  • Caesar at ABC is a contemporary re-telling of Shakespeare’s play now set in Los Angeles where the Latino Mayor is murdered.  Okay, it’s an adaptation.
  • The Hustle at ABC finds a small-town girl assisting a street-wise billionaire. Sean Combs produces.
  • House of Moore at ABC has Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) attached to star as the head of a Fashion House family in this darkly comedic one-hour.
  • Dick Ernest at CBS is a 1950s comedy that follows a family patriarch whose life is upended by the arrival of his beatnik nephew.
  • How to Speak American at CBS finds a coddled millennial teaching ESL to immigrants.
  • Brain Dead at CBS is a Washington DC political thriller with aliens controlling legislators (as opposed to lobbyists!).
  • In Time at Fox centers on three friends who attempt to balance adventures in time travel with their mundane lives.
  • Untitled Adult Underdogs at Fox is a comedy about a town overrun by a teenage street gang and the adults who fight back.
  • Eat Pray Thug at Fox has Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect) attached to star as a rapper who lives with his Indian parents in Queens.
  • The Young Pope at HBO is an historical fantasy about the early beginnings of Pope Pius XIII starring Jude Law, Diane Keaton and James Cromwell.
  • Future Man at Hulu is a comedy about a janitor by day who is a gamer by night that saves Humanity.
  • Musical Funeral Home Project at NBC takes place in South Central LA at a mother/daughter-run mortuary where they break into Song!
  • Middle Kingdom at NBC is a supernatural Kung Fu story set in San Francisco where contemporary folks clash with ancient demons.
  • Florent at Showtime has Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) attached to star as an NYC restaurateur in the mid-1980s backdrop of the AIDS crisis.
  • The Group at TBS centers on a support group of alien abductees in this comedy produced by Greg Daniels (The Office).
