TV Surf Report: Original Concepts Still Get Made

GRACE & FRANKIE.               GREENLEAF

Santa Monica, CA — Original Concepts still make it through the system somehow even though it seems all the broadcasters, cable networks and streaming services are betting on Super Hero shows, True Crime dramas, Adaptations of well-regarded Books, and Re-Boots of old favorites.

Take the premise of Grace & Frankie as an example: It’s a spin on the Female Buddy Comedy, a well-worn theme (Lucy & Ethel, Laverne & Shirley, Two Broke Girls). The latest twist in Netflix’s version (now in its 2nd season) is the gals are in their 70s and their husbands leave them for each other.  Great twist on a very familiar theme.

Chins up, Scribes.  Take heart, there will always (always!) be room for a great idea that will make it through the TV Matrix that is Development/Pilot Season. You are Neo, so follow your inner-White Rabbit and tell your story.

Here are some of this season’s best:

  • One Mississippi at Amazon.  Hold the phone!  A personal story from Tig Notaro (Inside Amy Schumer) who stars in this dark comedy about a prodigal daughter returning to her hometown.  Louis C.K. and Diablo Cody exec produce.
  • The Collection at Amazon.  A co-production with BBC-1, this post-WWII Fashion House drama stars Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons).  Eight episodes have been ordered. Oliver Goldstick exec produces.
  • Greenleaf on OWN.  Craig Wright (Six Feet Under) uses the backdrop of a Southern mega-church to tell a soap opera about wealth, sex and how power corrupts. Premieres in June.
  • Brain Dead on CBS is from Robert & Michelle King (The Good Wife) is a political thriller set in DC but with a big twist: Aliens control the legislators. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Mercy Street) and Aaron Tveit (Grease: Live) star.
  • In Time on Fox is an ensemble comedy about three friends who balance their mundane lives with adventures in time travel.  Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (Last Man on Earth) exec produce.
  • Pitch on Fox is a drama about the first woman in professional baseball.  Dan Fogelman exec produces.

HARDY

  • Taboo on FX is an original story by actor Tom Hardy and his father set in 1813 London that deals with the relationship between the UK and India over colonial expansion.  Dark intrigue follows.  Ridley Scott exec produces.
  • Shut Eye on Hulu is a dark comedy about storefront psychics in LA that stars Jeffrey Donovan and Isabella Rossellini.
  • Untitled Dramedy at NBC is another win for Dan Fogelman who writes this ensemble dramedy about a unique group of people all of whom are born on the same day.  Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy  Moore, and Chris Sullivan star.
  • Frontier at Netflix is a co-production with Discovery Canada that stars Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Aquaman) in this action adventure drama set in the 18th century fur trade.
  • Incorporated at SyFy is a futuristic espionage thriller from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck that stars Julia Ormond. The growing influence of big corporations and the private interests of Washington are explored.
  • The Group at TBS is an ensemble comedy about a support group of alien abductees from Greg Daniels (The Office).  Conan O’Brien exec produces.

Several commonalities exist among these original ideas that made it through The System:

TV Surf Report: Pilot Trends & What’s Getting Made

Santa Monica, CA — (Updated 07 May 2016)

True Crime. Super Heroes. Adaptations. Re-boots. Pre-Sold Titles. Actor-produced comedies and dramas. These are the Trends of what’s getting made this Pilot Season.

PEOPLE VS OJ SIMPSON

TRUE CRIME

Hollywood loves to out-gross itself.  Exhibit A:  The People Vs. O.J. Simpson on FX garnered a stellar cast, rave reviews, and great ratings, so of course, other networks started scrambling for its True Crime narrative.  Sadly, for the audience, they found them.

NBC plans to use its Law & Order franchise to remind us of the horrible Menendez Brothers murder case. (Two Bev Hills sons of privilege murdered their parents.)  The Peacock also explores The Von Bulow Affair, the murder trial of British socialite Claus Von Bulow and wife Sonny.

Not to be outdone, CBS will dramatize the Jon Benet Ramsay case, wherein, a child beauty pageant queen is murdered, and her parents and brother are the suspects.

ABC has low-rated American Crime, awaiting its renewal for Season 3.

A&E will explore the LA Riots.  Fox will explore Racism in Shots Fired, an event series starring Sanaa Lathan, Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfuss, and Stephen Moyer.

TNT pilots Robbers, a crime drama (and adaptation!) about a Texas couple on a crime spree while chased across the state by a cop.

Meanwhile, the podcast SERIAL continues to outperform all comers with its second season exploring the Beau Bergdahl case of a Marine gone AWOL.

CLOAK & DAGGER

SUPER HEROES. The Trend Continues…

ABC continues to mine Marvel for all its worth.  Mockingbird, aka, Marvel’s Most Wanted, is the latest Agents of SHIELD spin-off.  Damage Control is also in the pilot mix.

Meanwhile, Freeform just ordered Cloak & Dagger straight to series. This Marvel property is perfect for Freeform’s YA audience known as Becomers.

NBC has Powerless on tap. It’s a workplace comedy set in an insurance agency of normal people who live in the DC Universe. The Xena re-boot is still in the script stage.

FX has Legion starring Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as the telepathic son of Charles Xavier.

Netflix has ordered The Punisher starring Jon Bernthal in addition to both Luke Cage (premiering in September and starring Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (now in production and starring Finn Jones) coming up.  The Defenders, which unites Daredevil and Jessica Jones as well, shoots later this year.

Hulu pilots Future Man, a half-hour about a janitor by day/gamer by night who saves Humanity.  Seth Rogen (Preacher) exec produces.

Krypton at SyFy is a prequel series about Superman’s grandfather and his fight to bring equality to the planet (talk about an uphill battle!). David Goyer exec produces for DC Comics.

DREW

ADAPTATIONS. Books. Foreign Series. Hit songs. Newspaper Stories. Plays.

CBS adapts and re-boots Nancy Drew as a NYPD in her 30s and played by Sarah Shahi, a non-white actor. Diversity.  Also at CBS is a US re-make of Aussie comedy Upper Middle Bogan, a flamboyant but loving family of dragsters. Tracy Letts’ play, Superior Donuts, gets a pilot, too.

Fox pilots Zoobiquity, a light-hearted medical drama, starring Ben Rappaport.

A.P.B. at Fox is an adaptation of a NY Times story, “Who Runs the Streets of New Orleans?”  Len Wiseman (Underworld) exec produces.

Cat’s Cradle, the Kurt Vonnegut novel, becomes a Limited Series for FX.

Sharp Objects at HBO is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel about a reporter fresh out of a psych ward.  Amy Adams stars in the 8-episode series.

Big Little Lies at HBO is an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel about three mothers whose perfect lives unravel.  Reese Witherspoon exec produces the David E. Kelley limited series.

Chance at Hulu stars Hugh Laurie as a forensic neuropsychiatrist adapted from the novel by Kem Nunn.

The Handmaid’s Tale at Hulu is an adaptation of the Margaret Atwood novel starring Elizabeth Moss.

Jolene, the Dolly Parton hit song, gets its own telefilm at NBC following the success of Coat of Many Colors.

Midnight, Texas at NBC is a drama adapted from Charlaine Harris’ books set in a fictional, creepy Texas town.

Collision at NBC is a re-make of the British drama about a group of strangers whose lives are changed after a roadside accident.

Maniac at Netflix is an adaptation of the Norwegian comedy.  Emma Stone and Jonah Hill star in the 10-episode order.

Mindhunter at Netflix has a series order for this David Fincher directed adaptation story of a detective tracking down serial killers.  Charlize Theron exec produces.

Girl Boss at Netflix is an adaptation of Sophia Amoruso’s popular autobiography about her days dumpster diving before creating a hipster clothing line. Kay Cannon scripts and produces with Charlize Theron.

I’m Dying Up Here at Showtime is an adaptation of the William Knoedelseder book about the LA standup comedy scene in the ’70s.  Jim Carrey exec produces.

The Alienist at TNT has an 8-episode order for the Caleb Carr psychological thriller set in the Gilded Age of New York. Garrett Hedlund stars for director Cary Fukunaga (True Detective).

Eye Witness at USA has a 10-episode order for the US version of the Norwegian crime thriller, Oyevitne.  Julianne Nicholson and Gil Bellows star.

MACGYVER

RE-BOOTS. Old Chestnuts. Audiences love ’em. (The X-Files)

Lucas Till stars in CBS’ re-boot of MacGyver. James Wan (Fast & Furious 7) directs.

Prison Break at Fox gets the Limited Series treatment with 10 episodes.  Series stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell reprise their roles.

24: Legacy at Fox stars Corey Hawkins and Jimmy Smits as a younger agent paired with an older partner.

Twin Peaks is in production, adding stars by the day, which bodes well for Showtime’s big investment in David Lynch’s iconic series which won’t premiere until 2017.

One Day At A Time at Netflix has a 13-episode order and a Latin remix.  Justina Machado steps in for Bonnie Franklin.

Gilmore Girls at Netflix returns us to Stars Hollow for four 90-minute movies scripted by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.  Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel reprise their roles along with most of the supporting cast including Melissa McCarthy.

Lost in Space has a series order from Netflix.  Legendary TV produces. Danger, Will Robinson!

Amazon re-boots The Tick, the Ben Edlund comedy that aired on Fox.  Peter Serafinowicz (Spy) stars.

CRUEL INTENTIONS

PRE-SOLD TITLES.  Movies we recall fondly.  Minority Report and Rush Hour bombed but Limitless was okay.  Hey, it’s a vertical integration strategy that studios and networks gotta try in this age of marketing to the masses.  Blame M*A*S*H and Buffy the Vampire Slayer for being such successful movies-turned-series.

Training Day at CBS.  Bill Paxton and Julie Benz star in the small-screen version of the Jerry Bruckheimer drama again directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Lethal Weapon at Fox.  Damon Wayans stars.

The Exorcist at Fox stars Geena Davis in a psycho-thriller about, you guessed it, demonic possession.

Rocky Horror Picture Show at Fox is a 2-hour Event starring Laverne Cox, Adam Lambert, and original cast member Tim Curry.

Taken at NBC is a prequel to the Luc Besson films starring Liam Neeson (who does not reprise).

Cruel Intentions at NBC follows the next generation of Dangerous Liaisons.  Sarah Michelle Gellar reprises her role from the 1999 Roger Kumble film. Peter Gallagher also stars.

First Wives Club at TV Land.  The revenge comedy gets a pilot order.

Shooter at USA stars Ryan Phillippe in the Mark Wahlberg role as an off-the-grid Marine sniper.  This is both re-make and an adaptation of Stephen Hunter’s novel, Point of Impact.

Film Surf Report: Suddenly, Everyone Is Fighting! Super Heroes Work Out Their Issues

CAP AM CIV WAR

Santa Monica, CA — The theme of the year for Super Hero Franchise Films is Conflict.

Batman is going up against SupermanCaptain America and Iron Man seem to be at war.  The X-Men are at it again, but this time, it’s apocalyptic.

Has anyone else noticed that all of our favorite superheroes are fighting amongst themselves? These films were developed years ago, not to mention separately, so it’s pretty coincidental that all involve so much in-fighting. Zeitgeist!

Of course, these conflicts are necessary.

Batman must go up against Superman on March 25th in order to usher in the Dawn of Justice.  Their battle brings out Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Flash, all of whom will be joining the newly formed Justice LeagueLex Luthor, likely orchestrator of said conflict, must be assembling the Legion of Doom!

(Looking at you, Suicide Squad.)

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder are the true masterminds behind this epic fight in order to create the DC Extended Universe, wherein, all of our favorite Super Friends and Villains now live in a shared cinematic story world which kicked off in Snyder’s Superman re-boot Man of Steel, a film I thought was just okay.

I worry about DC’s ability to make great movies the way Marvel has.  Warner Bros.’ super hero movies have generally been kinda cheesey, relying on multiple villains and little Story.  (Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy being the exception to this generalization, natch.)

Here is the DCEU film slate, which includes 10 films in five years, generating billions:

  • Batman Vs. Superman    (March 25th)
  • Suicide Squad    (Aug. 4th)
  • Wonder Woman    (2017)
  • Justice League Part One    (2017)
  • Aquaman     (2018)
  • The Flash     (2018)
  • Shazam!      (2019)
  • Justice League Part Two    (2019)  Introducing Green Lantern!
  • Cyborg    (2020)
  • Green Lantern    (2020)

GAY SUPERMAN & BATMAN PHOTO

In May, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hosts the Civil War between Captain America and Iron Man, which seemingly is a spat over The Winter Soldier, but I don’t believe it.  Those darn Infinity Stones are at it again!

If the trailers and posters are to be believed, Team Cap has Bucky (TWS), Ant-Man, Falcon, Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch while Team Iron Man has Black Widow, The Vision, Black Panther, and War Machine.

Thor and The Hulk appear to be sitting out this fight.  Perhaps, they are gearing up for Thor 3: Ragnorak.  But who are our heroes really fighting? Surely, not Spider-Man, who also makes an appearance.

The Avengers: Infinity Wars are coming up, so this civil war must be a set-up of sorts.

Here is the Phase Three MCU film slate, comprising 13 films in five years, generating billions and billions:

  • Captain America: Civil War   (May 3, 2016)
  • Dr. Strange    (Nov. 4, 2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2     (2017)
  • Thor 3: Ragnorak    (2017)
  • Black Panther    (2018)
  • Ant-Man & Wasp    (2018)
  • Infinity Wars Part One    (2018)
  • Captain Marvel   (2019)
  • Infinity Wars Part Two    (2019)
  • Inhumans     (2019)
  • TBA x 3 (2020)  Fingers crossed one of these will be a Black Widow standalone film!

XMEN APOCALYPSE

Meanwhile, X-Men are still in Prequel Mode introducing us to young Jean Grey, young Storm, young Cyclops as well as the first look at the new Angel and Psylocke.

At least, we know the villain is Apocalypse, the first and most powerful Mutant.  He creates a new team of the Four Horsemen to pick a fight with young Professor X, Mystique, Beast and the Gang.

X-Men may be running out of creative steam or at least, running in timeline circles compared to the planned rollout of the MCU and the DCEU.  Fox needs to address this if they are to compete with Disney and Warner Bros. in the superhero wars.  At least, they have new cash cow Deadpool, who presumably, will be toplining Strike Force in the very near future.  They must re-boot Fantastic Four (again!) at some point in order to retain the property, as well.

Here is Fox’s  X-Men schedule of films:

  • X-Men: Apocalypse   (May 24th)
  • Wolverine 3    (2017)
  • Gambit    (2017)
  • Deadpool 2 (TBD)
  • Strike Force (TBD)
deadpool
Universal has responded by creating its Monsters Extended Universe where Van Helsing, The Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein presumably get into fights with one another before battling a common foe in a team franchise of, ahem, Extraordinary Gentlemen!
Paramount appears to be getting left in the dust, though.  Star Trek and Mission: Impossible have maybe one more mission each.  Perhaps, a planned re-boot of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider will help.  No shared universe as of yet.
As is, Sony, which just announced a standalone film for Venom which doesn’t bode well for an already weakened Spider-Man franchise. (Sorry, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei.) I suspect Sinister 6 will be getting dusted off real soon.

Film Surf Report: 2017 Looks To Be The Year of Disney (And Its Franchises)

BEAUTY & THE BEAST

Santa Monica, CA — Looking at the big franchise films slated for release in 2017, one headline jumps out at me:  Disney (including LucasFilm, Marvel and Pixar) is gonna have a boffo year at the box office with at least nine guaranteed hits resulting in billions of dollars in revenue.

Universal will also have a big year, too (but not as many hits).  Warner Bros. & DC may have a big miss (looking at you, Wonder Woman).  And Sony, well you are looking just okay with your C-List Franchises (Barbie, Jumanji).

Marvel Studios provide Hugh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine (via Fox), the return of Chris Pratt & Co. in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor 3: Ragnorak.  Finally, more of Phase 3 of the MCU and those darn Infinity Stones.

Pixar Studios has Cars 3 and Coco.

LucasFilm will kill it with Star Wars, Ep. VIII: Where Ya Been, Luke! (Working Title)

Meanwhile, Disney will unveil the live-action Beauty & the Beast starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson and Ian McKellen; the return of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 5; and, an as yet Untitled Live Action Disney Fairytale (Mulan?)

Here are the big tentpole films comin’ atcha, seemingly one per week in 2017:

PADDINGTON 2

TBD      Paddington 2     (Studio Canal)

Let’s not under-estimate the power of a family-based franchise such as Paddington.

DARK TOWER GUNSLINGER

Feb. 17th     The Dark Tower (Sony)

Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba star in the first installment of a planned trilogy. All right, all right, all right!  Part One centers on The Gunslinger.

WOLVERINE 2

March 3rd     X-Men: Wolverine 3  (Fox)

Thanks for the claws, Hugh Jackman!

BEAUTY & THE BEAST

March 17th   Beauty & The Beast    (Disney)

Bill Condon directs an all-star cast in this live-action re-make.  Easy to predict it will be a big hit connecting with a more diverse audience than the recent Cinderella.

KING KONG SKULL ISLAND

March 17th   King Kong: Skull Island   (Universal)

Tom Hiddleston leads a group of explorers which includes Oscar-winner Brie Larson.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-1

May 5th          Guardians of the Galaxy 2    (Disney & Marvel Studios)

James Gunn directs the sequel and Kurt Russell is set to portray Star Lord’s dad!  Will we see some Infinity Stones or Thanos?

May 12th         Barbie: The Movie     (Sony)

I. Just. Don’t. See. It.  Box Office Bomb Alert!  Sorry, Mattel.

POTC5

May 26th        Pirates of the Caribbean 5   (Disney)

Johnny Depp returns to much more lucrative waters.

BAD BOYS

June 2nd         Bad Boys 3      (Sony)

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return in hopes of reviving their careers.

MUMMY

June 9th          The Mummy    (Universal)

A re-boot starring Tom Cruise in Universal’s 1st Monster Universe franchise film. Sofia Boutella (Kingsman) is the Mummy herself!  Good counter-programming to the final entry in the Divergent series: Ascendant

June 16th         Cars 3    (Disney & Pixar Studios)

KINGSMAN DRESSING ROOM 3

June 16th         Kingsman 2    (Fox)

My personal favorite film of 2014 was Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service with Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Jack Davenport & Co.

WONDER WOMAN

June 23rd         Wonder Woman   (Warner Bros. & DC Comics)

Gal Gadot stars in this solo outing following an appearance in Batman Vs. Superman. Patty Jenkins directs the 4th installment of the newly minted DC Universe of Films following Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, and Suicide Squad.

DESPICABLE ME 2

June 30th         Despicable Me 3    (Universal)

People love those Minions.  Family fare to fare quite well.

SPIDER-MAN ART

July 7th            Spider-Man  (Sony & Marvel Studios)

Yikes! Too soon for re-boot #3 in my opinion.  Peter Parker is now even younger.  Marisa Tomei has been cast as Aunt May!

JUMANJI

July 28th          Jumanji  (Sony)

I have nothing to go on but Instinct which tells me this will be a dud along the lines of Sony’s re-make of Annie.

MISSION IMP 5

Aug. TBD         Mission Impossible 6     (Paramount)

Not holding my breath here for this release date to stick.

PITCH PERFECT

Aug. 4th          Pitch Perfect 3    (Universal)

Elizabeth Banks returns as the franchise’s triple threat (acting, producing, directing!).  While I enjoyed the first one, I thought the sequel was spectacularly bad.  Fingers crossed that Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson get a better story from screenwriter Kay Cannon.

PROMETHEUS

Aug. 4th          Alien: Covenant  (Fox)

The Sequel to PrometheusGood counter-programming to PP3.

GAMBIT

Oct. 6th           TBD Marvel Movie (Fox)

Likely to be Gambit starring Channing Tatum.  Pic’s originally been slated for October 2016 but got pushed back a year since production has not even begun yet.

THOR

Nov. 3rd                Thor 3: Ragnorak    (Disney & Marvel Studios)

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe delves further into those darn Infinity Stones, and Cate Blanchett joins the cast!

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Nov. 17th          Justice League Part One  (Warner Bros. & DC Comics)

Count me in!  Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash.  The Super Friends will only be as good as the Legion of Doom so Warner Bros. and DC had better get their villains right.  Looking at you, Suicide Squad!

Nov. 22nd              Coco    (Disney & Pixar Studios)

SWTFA POSTER

Dec. 15th            Star Wars, Ep. VIII: What’s New, Luke?    (Disney & LucasFilm)

Story picks up with Rey handing Luke Skywalker his old light saber…

MULAN

Dec. 22nd           Untitled Disney Live-Action Fairytale (Mulan??)

Note: This Film Slate is tentative as release dates tend to be fluid and change due to re-shoots, competition, etc., so I will update this post regularly.

Film/TV Surf Report: Hollywood’s Most Powerful Women Days Of Future Past

EW COVER HOLLYWOOD WOMEN

Santa Monica, CA —  When Entertainment Weekly published last week’s magazine featuring four of Hollywood’s most accomplished actresses/producers, I had a sense of Deja Vu.

I felt like I had seen this cover before.  And, I had….30 years ago, on Life Magazine:

LIFE MAG COVER LARGER SIZED

Jessica Lange, Sally Field, Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, and Goldie Hawn graced Life‘s cover in 1986 which proclaimed them the Most Powerful Women in Hollywood.

Now, it seems Eva Longoria (who produces Telenovela on NBC and Devious Maids on Lifetime), Reese Witherspoon (who produced Gone Girl as well as Wild), Kerry Washington (star of Scandal on ABC, and star and executive producer of  HBO’s Anita Hill biopic, Confirmation) and Elizabeth Banks (the triple threat of the bunch having starred, produced and directed Pitch Perfect 2) have inherited their title and their power…and they appear to be running with it!

Longoria (Unbelievable Entertainment), Witherspoon (Pacific Standard Films) and Banks (Brownstone Prods.) all have production companies with studio deals and all have been quite prolific saleswomen in Television this pilot season.  Witherspoon and Banks are racking up the producer credits in Film, as well as starring roles.

Nets Buy Scripts With Talent Attached

Banks, parlaying her supporting turn in the Hunger Games trilogy, just signed on to play the villain in the Power Rangers re-boot in addition to being set to direct Pitch Perfect 3 as well as the Charlie’s Angels re-boot.

Yet, those fantastic women of the ’80s, now Hollywood Icons, are still around and working. So, where did their Power (and their production companies) go?

Fonda, after a break from Hollywood and a marriage to medial mogul Ted Turner, continues to work in both film and television, starring in HBO’s The Newsroom and Netflix’s Grace & Frankie with Lily Tomlin (which she executive produces) and co-starring with Michael Caine in Youth.

Lange found a career resurgence with the best role(s) of her career, starring for four seasons on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story on FX, and winning an Emmy for her final season.

Field continues to work the most both in Film and Television, having recently been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, a part she famously had to campaign for to get.  What happened to Fogwood, her production company, though?

Streisand continues to record albums but has slowed considerably with her film work following comedic turns in Meet the Parents and The Guilt Trip.  She is attached to direct the feature, Catherine the Great, a Black List favorite screenplay.  She produced numerous of her own star vehicles (Yentl, Nuts, The Mirror Has Two Faces) through her company, Barwood Films, but nothing of late.

Only Hawn, seemingly the most prolific producer of the bunch (Private Benjamin, Wild Cats, Protocol, Overboard), seems to have stopped working altogether (not true, of course) following terrific turns in comedies like The First Wives Club (1996) and Death Becomes Her (1992).  She is due for a comeback as is her production company, Cherry Alley.

PRIVATE BENJAMIN     GRACE & FRANKIE    YENTL

So, what’s the lesson for EW’s Powerful 4 from Life Mag’s Most Powerful 5?  It would seem that Power fades and Production Companies slow down and disappear.  Such a generalization is unfair, so wouldn’t it be great to see a confab between the All Powerful-9 (plus three other notables mentioned below)?!

Yet, today is a new Era for Women in Film & Television.  EW’s Powerful 4 have a much better chance at maintaining Staying Power than Life’s Powerful 5.  These women have the potential to have producing careers as long as say, Clint Eastwood, who is now in his 80s.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence, a 4-time Oscar nominee at 26, needs to form her production company and get busy (if that’s what she wants to do).

Just ask Julia Roberts, whose Red Om banner (Stepmom, An American Girl) could have been much more prolific had she started much sooner.  Or, Meryl Streep, who has enjoyed first pick of scripts for decades, but did not parlay her power to a prolific producing career.

Each woman chose different paths through Hollywood, their own Stardom and Star Power.

Who will grace the virtual covers of these magazines in 2046?  And will Witherspoon, Longoria, Banks and Washington still be producing their own starring vehicles?

I would add Charlize Theron to this list, btw, as she is starring in multiple film franchises — Mad Max, Fast & Furious, The Huntsman — as well as producing series for Netflix through her Denver & Delilah Prods.

Also, let’s not put aside Drew Barrymore, whose production company, Flower Films, is still around.

Meanwhile, rising star Jessica Chastain (The Huntsman – Winter’s War) just launched Freckle Films Prods., so keep an eye out for her.

And last but certainly not least is Oprah Winfrey who is currently producing Queen Sugar for OWN via her company, Harpo Productions

OPRAH ON SET.png.

Next Up:  Disney and Universal Studios are poised to have very big years in 2017.

TV Surf Report: Nets Play It Safe With Pre-Sold Titles & Re-Boots Popular Among Pilot Orders

1st WIVES CLUB

Santa Monica, CA — (Updated, 19 March 2016)

Fear runs rampant through the halls of networks and streaming services as they have all these great scripts based on original ideas, and yet, they have little or no time to market them to their dwindling audience who is busy binge-watching a competitor’s programming or something on YouTube.

So what do the networks decide to do: Order pilots based on hit films (aka, pre-sold titles) and re-boots of Old Chestnuts (aka, well-loved and long-canceled series). It’s a successful strategy.

Oh, and they all want to “go younger.”  Sorry, 50+ readers/viewers.  You are dead to broadcasters.  Nice knowing you.

Blame it on The X-Files (which, by the way, is created by someone over 50, stars two people over 50, and was greenlighted by network executives over 50!)

DAVID & GILLIAN

Fox’s successful limited series re-boot of the television classic has not gone unnoticed by its competitors, all of whom are scrambling and sorting through their pile of pilot scripts looking for those titles that jump out and scream, “We already have an audience waiting to watch us!”

So far this season, CBS has succeeded with Limitless (including guest-spots from executive producer Bradley Cooper) but failed with Rush Hour while Fox, pre-X-Files, bombed with the Tom Cruise-less version of Minority Report. NBC kinda succeeded with Heroes: Reborn but has cancelled it anyway along with its re-boot of Coach.  ABC has yet to premiere its re-boot of Uncle Buck, and the jury is still out on the recently re-tooled re-boot of The Muppets.

MINORITY REPORTLIMITLESSHEROESUNCLE BUCK

Here are those pilots and series (based on pre-sold titles and/or re-boots) ordered thus far from the networks and various streaming services:

  • The First Wives Club at TV Land.  Pilot order for the ex-wife revenge comedy that starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton.
  • Galaxy Quest at Amazon.  Dean Parisot and the producers return for the re-boot, but will Tim Allen?
  • Jack Ryan at Amazon.  Carlton Cuse brings Tom Clancy’s hero to the small screen.
  • Howard’s End at BBC-1.  Kenneth Lonergan adapts E.M.Forster for television most likely without both Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter.
  • MacGyver at CBS. Henry Winkler returns as EP in this re-boot of an old favorite that now features a 20something Mac learning his trade.
  • Training Day at CBS.  No Denzel Washington or Ethan Hawke, but director Antoine Fuqua returns as EP in this cop drama.
  • Drew at CBS. Forget the Emma Roberts movie and the Pamela Sue Martin series and the Carolyn Keene series of books.  This update finds Nancy Drew as a 30something NYPD detective (and she’s to be played by a minority actor, which of course, is cool).
  • Star Trek at CBS.  Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller re-boot the next adventure in Gene Roddenberry’s serial outer space western soap opera.  Premieres in 2017 tho.
  • Riverdale at The CW.  The young’uns who watch The CW have never heard of Archie Comics, so this darker, edgier version of Betty, Veronica and Jughead from Greg Berlanti will seem totally new.
  • 24: Legacy at Fox.  No Jack Bauer, tho.  Kiefer Sutherland is unavailable as he is shooting Designated Survivor for ABC.  Re-boot goes younger, natch.
  • Lethal Weapon at Fox.  Damon Wayans stars in the re-make of the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover buddy comedy.
       LETHAL WEAPON
  • The Exorcist at Fox. Weekly demonic possession, anyone? Didn’t think so.  Somehow, Geena Davis has signed on to star.
  • Prison Break at Fox.  Another limited series “event,” original stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller return.
  • Tennison at ITV.  A young Jane Tennison returns for six episodes from Lynda LaPlante in this prequel to Prime Suspect.
  • Taken at NBC. No Liam Neeson in this Luc Besson television version, however, his character is back, and yes he’s much younger!
     CRUEL INTENTIONS
  • Cruel Intentions at NBC.   If the characters played by Reese Witherspoon and ex-husband Ryan Philippe had a teenage kid and that kid is now alone and sexting at a fancy boarding school, well then that’s what writer/director Roger Kumble has cooked up for your sadistic viewing pleasure following The Voice.  Sarah Michelle Gellar returns.
  • Law & Order: You the Jury at NBC.  The audience will decide the outcome of real-life civil cases for six episodes.  Oy vey!
  • Gilmore Girls at Netflix.  Amy Sherman Palladino’s redemptive new season returns with original stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bleidel, but alas, no Sookie.
  • One Day at a Time at Netflix.  Schneider and the gang are now Latino!  Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) stars in the Bonnie Franklin role.
  • Lost in Space at Netflix.  Danger, Will Robinson!
      DREW.png
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events at Netflix.  Neil Patrick Harris stars as Count Olaf in the latest incarnation of Lemony Snicket.
  • Twin Peaks at Showtime.  David Lynch and Mark Frost are currently shooting the next chapter of this cult classic with new episodes to premiere in 2017.  That’s a long time to wait for a damn fine cup of coffee, but okay, I’m game.  See, re-boots work!
  • Van Helsing at SyFy.  The basic cabler has acquired 13 episodes of a Neil LaBute-produced series featuring a female descendant, Vanessa Van Helsing.  Ugh.
  • Tales From The Crypt at TNT.  Director M. Night Shyamalan attempts to revive The Cryptkeeper (and Anthology).
  • Shooter at USA.  Ryan Philippe stars in the Mark Wahlberg role from the 2007 Paramount film which itself was adapted from Stephen Hunter’s novel Point of Impact.  Series order.
  • Salt at Sony International.  The Angelina Jolie spy thriller is being shopped at international markets for a television adaptation.

TV Surf Report: Event Television Is The Word In Hollywood After Grease: Live! All Hail, Director Tommy Kail!

GREASE FINALE.png

Santa Monica, CA —  (Updated 19 March 2016)

Broadcast Networks learned a very big lesson Sunday night with Fox’s highly rated and well-received production of Grease: Live!

Event Television remains a big draw for the Big Four.

As long as the networks are in the Event Business, they will remain relevant in the ever-changing landscape currently hijacked by Netflix and Amazon.

The Oscars. The Super Bowl. The World Series. And now, live musicals.

These are the events that audiences still look to ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox to produce for their viewing pleasure.

DIRTY DANCINGWIZ LIVE      SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE

ABC has a re-make of Dirty Dancing in development with Abigail Breslin and Debra Messing set to star.  Perhaps, the network will consider making an event out of what was a planned 3-hour movie for television.

NBC has set Hairspray as its next live musical for December.  Neil Meron and Craig Zadan follow-up their successful productions of The Wiz, Peter Pan (okay, less successful), and The Sound of Music.

HAIRSPRAYRENTGODSPELL

You can bet CBS executives are wondering how they can get into this game.  Godspell or Jesus Christ Superstar, anyone?  Fox will probably stick with as young a crowd-pleaser as possible which makes their next live musical (probable) choice a no-brainer:  Rent.

This spring, Fox will test the waters with The Passion, an Easter-themed faith-based live musical production executive produced by Tyler Perry and starring Trisha Yearwood, Seal, Chris Daughtry and more. Expect a hit!

THE PASSION LIVE

Fox also has a production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in development with Laverne Cox, Adam Lambert and Tim Curry set to star.

Thanks to Director Tommy Kail’s re-inventive approach to Grease: Live!, there will be many more Events to come. Also, Social Media played a huge part to Grease: Live! as an additional 2 million viewers were added in delayed viewing.

Event Television is once again The Word in Hollywood.  It’s Electrifying!

TV Surf Report: Hollywood Likes To Re-Make Foreign Series But Usually Finds Itself Lost In Translation

MAD DOGS PHOTO               UGLY BETTY USA            HOMELAND

Santa Monica, CA —  Telenovelas from South America, Reality Competition Series from Great Britain, Crime Thrillers from Norway and Family Comedies from Australia.

All are being developed for US re-makes, but will What Makes Them Special get Lost in Translation?  It’s not easy.

Last year, 13 or so foreign series got the U.S. re-make treatment in an attempt to find the next Homeland, Ugly Betty, Dancing with the Stars, The Office or Big Brother, all of which originated elsewhere.

NBC failed with The Slap, an Australian drama. ABC failed with season two of Resurrection, a re-make of the French series, The Returned. Even AOL launched Connected, a reality show with New Yorkers armed with camcorders, a show that originated from Israel.

Amazon is set to premiere Mad Dogs, a U.S. version of a British drama about under-achieving 40somethings who reunite.  Shawn Ryan (The Shield) produces.  Steve Zahn, Billy Zane, Ben Chaplin, and Michael Imperioli star.

Fox has rolled over its cast-contingent re-make of Luther, Idris Elba’s popular UK detective drama.

Meanwhile, here are the Foreign Series up for US re-makes this year.  Most have script commitments, but several have series orders.

All the networks (including Basic Cable) seem open to re-makes.  NBC and ABC both have executives in the UK specifically tasked with looking for shows whose concepts can successfully cross The Pond.  Not so much with the streaming services, though.

COLLISION UK LUTHER  UPPER MIDDLE BOGANCODE   BRAUNSCHLAGMAD DOGS ON AMAZON.jpg

  • Feed The Beast (Denmark) at AMC.  David Schwimmer and Jim Sturgess star as best friends who open a restaurant in this re-make of the Danish series, Bankerot.
  • Eyewitness (Norway) at USA is a crime thriller re-make of the Norwegian series, Oyevitne, told from the eye witness’ POV.  10-episode order.
  • Big Ballet (UK) at ABC.  This British reality show gets adapted as a dramedy about plus-sized ballet dancers.
  • Braunschlag (Austria) at ABC.  Comedic adaptation about a small-town female mayor who fakes a miracle has been ordered to pilot with a new name, Hail Mary!
  • Upper Middle Bogan (Australia) at CBS. Dan O’Shannon produces a re-make of the Aussie comedy about a flamboyant but loving family of drag-racers.
  • Hunted (UK) at CBS. Regular people on the run from highly skilled trackers compete in this one-hour reality series.
NO TOMORROW    JANE THE VIRGINUGLY BETTY ESPANOL
  • No Tomorrow (Brazil) at The CW is an hour-long romantic comedy script ordered to Pilot to be executive produced by Ben Silverman and written by Corinne Brinkerhoff (Jane the Virgin, which was also a foreign series re-make).
  • The Code (Australia) at Fox is a political thriller about two brothers.  Graham Yost (Justified) produces.
  • Familia En Venta (Colombia) at Fox is a half-hour single-camera comedy about the conscious uncoupling of an affluent Hispanic family starring Roselyn Sanchez.
  • Hypochondriac (Colombia) at Fox is a comedy about a woman who receives a fatal diagnosis and sets out to really live her life.  Julie Bowen (Modern Family) produces this telenovela adaptation of La Hipocondriaca.
  • Collision (UK) at NBC is a drama about a group of strangers whose lives are changed after a roadside accident. Carol Mendolsohn (CSI) produces.  10 episode-order.

TV Surf Report: 2016 Is The Year Super Heroes Stake Their Claim As Entertainment Overlords

PREACHER   WATCHMEN

Santa Monica, CA —  (Updated 07 April 2016) Resistance is Futile, Viewers.  Kneel before Comic Book Adaptations and Super Hero Television.  Their Time is Now…or, at least for the next 5+ years until their powers fail due to audience ennui.

In October 2014, scribe David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) and I led a panel discussion at the London Screenwriters Festival on the topic of Originality in TV versus Commercialism.  At the time, a mere 29 Super Hero films were slated for release by the major studios.  Dave and I correctly predicted that TV would follow suit and mimmick this trend, which it has done in terrific fashion…to varying degrees of success.

LSWF Panel With Dave Reynolds & Steve La Rue

Commercialism wins. So did Creativity, though.

DC LEGENDS OF TOMORROW   SUPER GIRL ACTUAL

This past season has seen CBS launch Supergirl to great acclaim and to modest success.  It’s a terrific show, but it’s never going to be the hit CBS hoped because it’s on the wrong network!

Supergirl belongs on The CW where I predict it will ultimately end its run.

Meanwhile, NBC re-booted Heroes on Thursday with Heroes: Reborn to modest success (and a lot of new, really young Heroes), but apparently not enough success as the re-boot isn’t continuing beyond its initial order which is puzzling.

HEROES REBORN    XENA

The Xena: Warrior Princess re-boot is still at script stage with Javier Grillo-Marxuach (The 100, Lost) writing.  Powerless, an Office-inspired comedy, is a pilot script set in the DC Universe.  No production order as of yet.

Fox has declared its sole Marvel property, the X-Men Universe-inspired Hellfire, to now be on the slow development track following the departure of showrunners Evan Katz and Manny Coto who are fast-tracking the 24 sequel, Legacy.

Meanwhile, Gotham continues to downward spiral in the ratings and lacks a compatible lead-in or lead-out program.  Fox also has Lucifer.  This comic adaptation is another DC property.  The Arch Angel is solving crimes and punishing criminals in LA.

HELLFIRE CLUB    DAMAGE CONTROL

Meanwhile, the success stories, at least creatively, have been at Netflix whose initial 4-series deal with Marvel have been creative home-runs.

Daredevil is now in its second season with a spin-off ordered for The Punisher; Jessica Jones (just renewed for a second season) has been the most-coveted show of the year thanks to writer/producer Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight) and star Krysten Ritter who plays Jessica as a super hero with Soul (and its tormented!).

Luke Cage is now in production with Mike Colter reprising his role from Jessica Jones and Alfre Woodard co-starring.  Iron Fist has finally been cast, so The Defenders can assemble and dazzle us.

JESSICA JONES PROMO SHOT    LUKE CAGE

Meanwhile, ABC seems bound and determined to stick with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter (a third season pickup seems unlikely) while continuing its corporate synergy by ordering Marvel’s Most Wanted to pilot.  All this despite mediocre ratings which are clearly taking a backseat to creative content and building valuable properties for studio libraries to license in perpetuity.  If only an Avenger would drop by every once in a while as Phase Three commences on the feature side with the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

Damage Control, a live-action half-hour about the Marvel clean-up crew, is in the pilot mix awaiting a production order.

ARROW    HAWKMAN & HAWKGIRL   DAREDEVIL

The CW is Super Hero Central thanks to uber-producer Greg Berlanti who has successfully launched Arrow, The Flash, and now DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.  That audience seemingly cannot get enough of super-television and is being well-served with both ratings and critical hits.  Berlanti even resurrected NBC’s failed Constantine and has folded him into his DC Universe.  Pilot-wise, the netlet is developing Bob the Valkyrie from writer Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire).

AMC is about to launch Preacher starring Dominic Cooper in the Seth Rogen-produced comic adaptation.  The trailers look pretty darn good, too.

FX has ordered Legion to series jumping on the Marvel bandwagon and circling the X-Men World by telling the parallel story of Charles Xavier’s son whose telepathic abilities create havoc.  Sounds fringe, at best.

TNT just passed on Titans from sister company Warner Bros. Horizon & DC Comics, so that property is available to go elsewhere, and I predict it will.

SyFy has Krypton, the Superman prequel series from David Goyer, in its development pipeline.  Meanwhile,  The Magicians (who aren’t technically super heroes, I know), a critically acclaimed series of YA novels by Lev Grossman about an American magic school that’s much darker and sexier than Hogwarts, has received an order for a second season.

MAGICIANS BOOK COVER    AMERICAN GODSTITANS

Starz has American Gods from Neil Gaiman and Bryan Fuller (Hannibal). Ian MacShane stars as Mr. Wednesday. HBO, meanwhile, has Watchmen in development with Zack Snyder.

Hulu has ordered a pilot for Citizen, a new take on the Super Hero origin story set in LA.  Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and The Dying Girl) writes and directs.

CLOAK & DAGGER

Even Freeform (nee, ABC Family) is getting into the act, ordering Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger straight to series, hoping to find a compatible series for just renewed Shadowhunters (its Buffy knock-off).

It’s a super time for Super Hero television.  We should enjoy it while it lasts, which I predict will be five years or less before Star Wars imitators arrive and we are inundated with space operas…prepare to be re-booted again, beloved Battlestar Galactica.
